Can an iPhone 4 handle the Q40 un-amped? Or will the sound quality degrade too much that an amp is necessary?

they will be better with an amp. everything tightens up. its like going from a dull knife to a sharp knife. they both cut, but one is cleaner.
no need for an expensive amp. I use a fiio e11. I have a hornet and practical devise amp each of which cost considerably more. there is not much difference between the e11 and the others to justify the price.
