M-Audio Q40 Impressions (long w/pics)

So I replaced original pads with 770pro/80 pads and it definitely improved sound stage. They sound amazing. Better than my old 770pro/80 and brand new 770pro LE 32ohm. The Beyers beat them in sound isolation (by little) and build quality though.
 
They don't have recessed mids at all unlike Beyers and PRO 900. To be honest the 770 LE kinda fixed recessed mids but I still think Q40 with Beyer pads sounds better.
 
I actually think they now sound better than PRO 900 and very close to D7000. Amazing. Excellent for gaming.
 
I didn't like Q40 at all when I got them because I was never able to get a proper fit on my head/ears. Maybe I have big ears but left cup always sounded slightly louder. And they were uncomfortable. Beyer pads fixed all that and I'm very happy

Ended up keeping mine in the end which I'm happy about.
 
Not sure if I miss read but some have found the Beyer pads veil the sound. I found that initially but then I tried the foam (covering the driver) from the stock pads. I cut it, which wasnt too pretty, from the stocks and tucked it over the Beyer pads...Voila! Comfort and best sound.
 
I think the thickness of the Beyer pads mutes some of the frequency. Did anyone else find this?

I just placed an order for these on amazon.uk. They have them for GBP 59,00 now and that's a very good price (for Europe).
 
Have to ship them to my sister that lives in the UK though so it will probably take a while before I get them

to me, they are quite thick and warm sounding even with the beyer pads. they lack transparency and instrument separation. they do not isolate well, also. would the dt770 be better in these regards?

I would suggest the V-Moda M-100 as I am a past Q40 owner and current M-100 fan.  Check out the thread if you are not familiar with them.

Definitely.  M-100 is circumaural- better comfort and isolation, but not the most comfortable circumaural as the pads are on the small side.  They are much more comfortable now after a few months than when I first purchased them.  The sound is phenomenal.

Wow, look at that amazing extension to 20Hz and well past 30K! That big peak around the 7-10K region might cause some sibilance issues though. Interesting that there's a dip at 175Hz and then a bump at 220Hz. Would love to see the bass hump centred around 50Hz instead of 100Hz, but nobody makes headphones like that :frowning2:
 
Can somebody please provide a comparison between the AKG K81dj and the Q40? I know the Q40 is way better (and costs 3x as much) but I'd like a more detailed comparison. Is bass impact/quantity similar, with the Q40 being better extended, less boomy, and better defined? At least that's my assumption.

The DT770 Pro peaks at ~40 Hz, and has a dip centered at slightly above 200 Hz.
