Low and high gain on Schiit amps

My Lyr 2 just arrived.
A couple of questions...
I have it hooked up to my two channel stereo system.
Using Beyerdynamic Amiron Home Headphones....250 ohms.
Have been experimenting with high and low gain.
Does it matter what I choose.
Low gain just seems that I need to turn up the volume.
What are the advantages of either option?
