Hello!

Today I got the Soundtrack of the movie "Good night, and good luck." from the library. It features some slow and quiet swing/vocal jazz songs. But guess what? The vocals and the sax are causing audible distortions and I measured the first track's loudness to be -8.6dB RMS (modern pop/rock is ~ -10dB or -11dB). I was shocked. Very sad that even music which is "not so mainstream" is mastered that way.

most music has effected by the so called 'loudness war', not just pop/rock. for a better look at what you're hearing download Audacity, open the music file in it and take a look at the waveform, where you can easily tell if it's compressed or what not.
