if you want to make a mix cd of songs from the 80's like The Cure and REM, and put them along with newers songs by bands like The Get Up Kids or At The Drive In, it's a real bitch because you have to do all kinds volume matching or you end up reaching for the damn volume knob after every song.

Foobar is your friend MasonJar. Scan with replaygain, then use foo_burninate to burn using nero, all songs will be normalized. But that still doesnt help the fact that lables are ruining music. I think we should all pitch in and make a lable free industry where the cd is mastered the right way and lables dont steal the little money that is made, yay!

You know the really funny thing about those articles is that a lot of the music that they're referencing as being high quality from the past was trashed in it's day for being overly limited. Stuff like Power Windows was considered crap. Not sure if this is just human nature in action "nostalgia" though based on the numbers for those samples it just seems that the same old trend towards more compression is continuing.

Check out iVolume if you're on a Mac and do not want to use iTunes's inferior volume adaption. Best handful of bucks spend in years.
