My portable rig of choice over the passed 6 months has been Campfire Andromedas run via 4.4mm balanced cable to my Sony zx300a. However, on a recent flight I lost them while wrangling my kids through airports somewhere in Asia and so I'm now in the situation where I'm looking for a new portable rig.
I would be very happy to have this combination again but I thought I'd check here first to see if there's anything in the sub $2000 price range which people think would be a better combination? (Rebuy would be about $1700 but I don't mind spending some more).
I love the clarity of the andros and generally speaking I think I like my headphones a little warm. But the most important aspect of listening to music for me is probably the feeling of immersion. I don't think width of sounstage is so important, the Andro/ZX300 combination was never super wide but it was incredibly immersive for me.
Of the other headphones I own I listen to the Elears the most and sometimes my TH-X00 PH when I want something meaty. Bass is important to me but not at a sacrifice for clarity, which is why the PH's only work for some music for me.
I was thinking about Atlas as a potential, or maybe one of the offerings from Empire Ears? I'm also open to going for closed back around ears if they are portable enough, but I probably have to stay away from customs as it's a little hard for me to get imprints made I think?
