Hey, i was wondering if anybody has any recommendations or information on what there is available in terms of portable audio players that have the ability to play lossess compressed files such as flac. I have found a few such as ipod and iaudio. It would be useful if someone could shed some light on the pros and cons of each. Any suggestions welcome.

Cheers

I have an iRiver H340 and a Cowon A2.
The Cowon plays FLAC. The iRiver (with rockbox) plays most of the lossless codecs (WAV, FLAC, WV, etc.) - See this link for more info on which codecs the iRiver is able to play under rockbox.
The Ipod supports rockbox also, such as some archos.
If you wanna pay less get an Ipod.
If you wanna best quality (sound and player) get an iRiver or an iAudio/Cowon.
I had an Ipod nano and i DON'T recommend it to anyone. Sold it after less then 2 months of use ...

Cheers. Sounds like the iaudio is the way forward then. I'm only interested in the quality of the audio really. I can manage without great functionality

I can confirm that iAudio products have pretty great sound quality direct from the headphone out (my X5 did)

Can't say anything to the iRiver or iAudio/Cowan.

Though another way to go is with a 4G 60gb RWA iMod iPod. The sound quality on the iMod iPod is really sweet.

You can get the iPod refurb from smalldog.com. It is like you got it brand new.
And Vinnie at Red Wine Audio is really helpfull and does a great job with the mod of the iPod. Its amazing how good it sounds.
The all you have to do is Rockbox it if you want to play FLAC instead of ALAC.

You will need an amp to go with it as the iMod makes the Headphone out a true line-out. And a good IC. Though once you listen to it...you don't mind all the money you've spent.

Just a thought....
