the ppa is a great sounding amp, dead quiet like no humm, nada *feels jealous* which is why i ordered my elpac wall wart to replace my ratshacks for my meta to tie me over ....

Aren't almost all of the popular solid state amps (meta42 or better DIY, popular commercial amps of similar price range) dead quiet? I wouldn't think that to be much of a virtue, more of an expectation of any quality headamp (especially solid state).

I know Tyll spent quite a while comparing an earlier PPA prototype to the max, anyone else make comparisons to some commercial solid state designs (in any price range)?

The PPA is uncommonly resistant to hum and noise from inferior power supplies. Other solid state amps like the META42 need a better power supply to sound as quiet.

having only played with a grand total of (4) META42's built on Tangents Board i noticed that cheep unregulated Wall Warts will result in Audible Hum on Sensitive Low impedance Phones. All the 4 META's did this regardless of who made them.

Most other solid state Amps will also hum on such a supply, This is why almost all outboard AC supply's are Regulated that come with Headphone Amp's. and those that contain Integrail AC supply's are also Regulated.

While some of the Unique circuits in the PPA allow use with Less than perfect Power and still sound quite good, I have noticed an improvement if the PPA is operated on Batteries or a quality Regulated Supply, However this also happens with other Amps, however it is just less bothersome on the PPA.
