I would like to keep it either electronic or instrumental. When I was in the third grade, my teacher played some piano piece that was very haunting and spacey. It really got my attention and I loved it. I have been looking for some haunting and/or somber music that is void of singing ever since. The closest thing that I have is Opeth. I will NEVER grow tired of the music as it is very emotional and haunting; however, I am not looking for something hard. I want something that I can study to, but not backround music.

I know this makes little sense, but I thought you guys would be the best help

i've got something thats probably more on the scary side of haunting

Juno Reactor - LucianA

its a 60 minute long foray into the depths of what you can do without beats

(aim me and I can hook you up with a sample, there isnt singing per-say, there are a couple times where a lone woman lets out some eastern sounding lines, but nothing intrusive like lyrics)

What you are looking for is called Darkwave style.
Slow atmospheric beautiful style usually with haunting siren type vocals, often electronic with classic elements, like velvet fog on darkmoon night. Most of these do have some etherial vocals but are very relaxing overall, here are some great artists to check out:

Dead Can Dance
Dargaard
Faith and the Muse
Lycia
Love Spirals Downwards
Virgin Black

Just check any of these at music site then explore recommended similar groups and you will soon have large list. Check these samples:

DCD
Lycia

copied from an earlier post of mine:

The only dark ambient I have are 'The Magnificent Void' by Steve Roach and 'Stalker' by Robert Rich and Lustmord which are at the extreme of what could be considered music as they are non-vocal, non-beat pure electronic black atmosphere. Lost in the farthest reaches of space music. I like it.

I'm sure some sountracks would fit the bill as well.

Edit:I haven't found exactly what i'm looking for in terms of haunting music with identifiable instruments. But speaking of soundtracks 'Blade Runner' by vangelis is I think my favourite and haunting it certainly is. Sweeping dark ambient backdrops, electronic noises, piano, xylophone, saxaphone, middle eastern instruments, synth, etc.

My dark, haunting ambient collection is way too small.

Mussorgsky, Entr'acte from Khovanschina
Lacrimosa, Kyrie (they do sing "Kyrie" over and over again, though)
In The Nursery, Hindle Wakes (entire album -- maybe not 'haunting', maybe only 'sombre')

i know you requested instrumental, but julee cruise's album Float into the Night is the most haunting album i've ever heard. David Lynch and Angelo Badalamente wrote the songs, some of which have been used in Lynch movies/Twin Peaks.

creepily beautiful.
beautifully creepy.

VOICES on the Macross Plus Soundtrack is creepy. Japanese singer singing something I can't understand, plus some electronic noodlings = oddness.

I think you would be more into Dark Ambient than Dark Wave, which is also good. Over everything else, I would recommend Elend, which has a more violent approach to dark wave, and mixes full classical orchestra with electronic music (industrial mostly).

For starters : Dark Ambient is a music genre, which aims at creating soundscapes that are as haunting, scary, dark and emotional, as possible. Usually the albums are very laid back, instrumental and slow. Ulver - Lyckantropen themes is a good first DA album, as it's quite easy to listen and most importantly, it's easy to get. The "real" dark ambient is harder to find, though some metal (net)stores sell it. Some recommendations : Atrium Carceri, No Xivic and Raison D'etre.

If you want to explore further the emotional side of metal, try out some doom metal bands, especially funeral doom ones. Shape of Despair - Angels of Distress is a definite masterpiece and to me, the best funeral doom album ever done. It sounds slightly similar to Opeth, but with slower tempo and more emphasis on emotions, mostly sadness and depression. Think about Moonlight Sonata or Swan Lake with even more emotion and guitar background, and you're close to Shape of Despair.

Creepy?!? Hauntingly beautiful, yes, but no way is that song creepy.

My suggestion is the soundtrack to the pc game American McGee's Alice. Done by Chris Vrenna of NiN fame, it definitely has what you're looking for, and is one of my top three game soundtracks.

try some Scorn. Start with EVANESCENCE. Great album. I guess the style would be called "Ambient Dub"
