I currently have a pair of Ultrasone PROline 2500's, and I love them. I have some extra money, and I am looking to get a new pair of cans to broaden my horizons.

Price range is not important, but under 800 would be good. I would most likely buy used here on the forums, or new from PriceJapan

Choices:

AT AD2000 - Great bass response, very cool styling.
Darth Beyers - I loved my DT770's, so these would be a great choice
Denon D5000 - Heard some great things about these from various members.
JVC dx1000 - This is my personal choice, because they are massive, and are supposed to sound godly!

I have also considered the Ultrasone Edition 9, but I cannot afford that much money, unless I get a great deal i the used market.

Oh Skylab, where are you?

I know you have heard a lot of these!

Will be used with my PPX3, Zhaolu D2 as source.

Having owned, or listened to (extensively) all phones on that list except for the JVCs, I can say with confidence that the D5000s are my favorites by a very, very large margin. Then I did the "Markl mod", and my love for them grew even more. Of all of the phones I currently own (or have owned in the past, see my profile) I find my self reaching for the D5000s the most.

For whatever it is worth, 90% of my music consists of Metal of all genres.

Good to see you posting more lmilhan! You helped me out when I was still a newbie. Guess we came full circle huh?
I like the look of the Denon's as well as the comfort. I wonder if skylab has an opinion similar to yours...

To all of the Grado Fan-boys:
Dont worry, I still like Grado's, but I cannot justify buying 500 dollar RS1's because I would like a circumaural headphone.

I will end with a pair of sr225 in the end.

If memory serves, I think Skylab digs the D5000s as well, but he prefers Darth Beyers slightly more. I am sure he will be along eventually to correct me if I am wrong.

As for Grado phones, I never thought I would see the day, but I actually prefer my "Markl moded" D5000s over even the mighty RS-1s!

And that's saying a lot since the RS-1s were my top dogs for quite a long time.

Good luck with whatever you decide on!

Alright, that puts the d5000 in the lead. I don't think I would want to get Darths unless I had enough to get a pair VDX3's.

I am still curious about the ad2000...
