I am looking for a new pair of headphones and I think I have narrowed them down to either the Grado RS1 or the AKG K701 but before I decide I want to ask everyone which they would take and if there are any others I should be looking at as long as they are around or under $1k mark.

Thanks.

what type of music do you listen to? and what type of sound characteristics are you wanting to add/subtract?

I have both RS1 and K701, but I am not an expert in explaining all the technical details. But I will try.

RS1 has deep, tight bass and has more bass impact. Great for fast music, especially rock. They can be bright for some recordings and sometime can be little harsh.

K701 is still burning so its not yet 100%. It has huge soundstage, very detailed and excellent for female voices.

RS1 is also detailed but not as K701.

I listen to a range of music, but mostly rock/alternative/indie.

if you have the resource to own multiple headphones, i would keep the K701 for referencing use. and keep the the rest as "fun" headphones if you know what i mean...

Well done Varma! This is exactly how I would describe the RS1 and the K701.

Not sure yet...still in the market for one. I was looking at the Hornet but open to suggestions.

If you're going to amp either with the Hornet I'd take some money out of that headphone budget and put it toward a proper amp, unless your primary aim is portable audiophilia.

RE: the headphone choice, based on my opinions of the K701 under various amps and cables and my time with the RS-2, I'd pick the RS-1 blind.
