If purely from a music player perspective, meaning you don't need the apps and other ipod functions. > J3.

If you want a tiny great player, get a Sandisk Clip+ and a 32GB microSDHC class 4 card to put in it. Total price around $55 with a 4GB Clip+. You could spend $200 for an 8GB Cowon J3 and a 32GB card to put in it.

Possibly look into the Hisound products if you are mainly concerned with sound quality. They put both the ipod and J3 to shame (sound quality wise). The UI is very basic though but quite easy to navigate via the resource menu. I think the Yamahas have somewhat of a similar sound signature to the Sennheisers IE8/IE80s so I bet they'd pare extremely well together.

the J3 gives you longer battery life than the Clip+ or Touch. The J3 has good video and better sound enhancements than the Clip+ or Touch. The Clip+ and J3 have a card slot, which the Touch lacks. The touch has wifi. Imo if you want wIFI though, then get a Samsung Galaxy Player. The Galaxy has a card slot and wifi. The Galaxy 4.2 has an easily swappable battery which the others lack.

The Clip+ is tiny, cheap, has great sound and a card slot, but just 12 or so hours of battery life. I often use mine with a USB battery pack to greatly increase battery life. The battery life on the J3 is probably over 40 hours, vs probably around 30 hours for the Galaxy player 4.2.

For just a few dollars, you can get apps that give you all the sound enhancements you could possible want....including the same ones as on the Cowon players.

Just go for the clip. If you want something serious then look into hifiman line, for example hifiman 601. All cowons, apple players are on the same level with clip+. Don't waste your money.

Gotta love that 9-hour battery life on 601.

Makes my rockboxed Clip Zip's ~15 hour battery life look pretty good!
