Hey guys... as i wrote in the subject,i am currently looking for some new progressive metal artists. not so long ago,i deeply fell in love with the metal sound and especially progressive metal(i have been listening to rush for a lot of years ..so the progressive scene is not so new to me) and i am looking for some new artists/bands that i can listen to.
till now,the best album i heard is "images and words" by dream theater. its simply breathtaking! so metallic sounding and so wonderfully melodic!

if you can please introduce me some new artists with the same sound signature of dream theater and especially albums like "images and words" and "awake".
thx!

Not really what you're after, but you might enjoy Arcturus

download the song Kinetic for an example

If you haven't heard Mew, I would check them out. While they would only fit quite loosely into the genre of progressive rock, they have the "metallic" guitar-driven sound you might be after. The rhythms are very weird, always seeming to be just what you don't expect, making for some pretty interesting listening experiences.

thx..the metal sound is awsome! not only the guitars, but also the drums.(i just loooove the piercing high tymbral! can listen all day to it!)
and when it combines with progressive its even better.
i will check them out thx

I am not sure if there's any non-melodic prog-metal bands out there...

Anyway, without harsh vocals:

Symphony X: The Divine Wings of Tragedy, V, The Odyssey
Crimson Glory: Transcendence
Queensrÿche: Operation Mindcrime
Green Carnation: Light of Day, Day of Darkness
In the Woods: Omnio
Suspyre: A Great Divide
Solefald: In Harmonia Universali

With Harsh vocals:

Opeth: Blackwater Park, Still Life, My Arms, Your Hearse
Disillusion: Back to Times of Splendor
Tiamat: Wildhoney
Subterranean Masquerade: Suspended Animation Dreams
Orphaned Land: Mabool
Maudlin of The Well: Bath, Leaving Your Body Map

Not really progressive metal, but strong progressive elements:

Death:Symbolic
Nevermore: Dead Heart in a Dead World, This Godless Endeavor
Edge of Sanity: Crimson
Anacrusis: Screams and Whispers
Savatage: Streets
Sadist: Above the Light

Am I doing it right? In any case get Symphony X first, they're my favorite band.

.

i also assume that all the progressive metal bands are melodic in nature, but i have encountered a few dream theater albums that i didnt like because they were more metalic and without melodies at all. for this kind of metal i listen to metallica , only for the pure metal sound and they also have some nice melodies every now and then.

I would specifically recommend the album And the Glass Handed Kites. I think this one is the most prog-oriented. You can listen to plenty of tracks on the band's MySpace page to see if you like their sound.

Surprised that nobody has mentioned Porcupine Tree.

I was just about to...

Also, I don't know how much DT you've heard, but if it's just what's been mentioned so far, get MORE. Scenes From A Memory is a must, Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence, and I like Train Of Thought a lot too.

I'd also recommend Ayreon - The Human Equation. That's the only album of theirs I have, but I'd highly recommend it.

And Tool, although it's not melodic metal, but if you do like metal you should enjoy Tool. Favourite albums of mine are Lateralus, 10000 Days, Aenema.

And lastly, I'll second the recommendation for Opeth.

Dreamscape is essentially a 100% Dream Theater clone. I don't particularly like them, but I doubt you could go wrong with any of their albums if you're looking for "that sound".

Some other bands/albums you may like -

Adagio - Underworld
Andromeda - Extension of the Wish
Ark - Burn the Sun
Abydos - Abydos
Ayreon - Into the Electric Castle
Beyond Twilight - Section X
Circus Maximus - The 1st Chapter
Conception - In Your Multitude
Devin Townsend - Terria
Disillusion - Back to Times of Splendor
Edge of Sanity - Crimson
Evergrey - The Inner Circle
Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry
Orphaned Land - Mabool - The Story of the Three Sons of Seven
OSI - Office of Strategic Influence
Pagan's Mind - Celestial Entrance
Pain of Salvation - Entropia
Pain of Salvation - One Hour by the Concrete Lake
Planet X - Moonbabies
Ring of Fire - Dreamtower
Symphony X - The Divine Wings of Tragedy
Threshold - Hypothetical
Vanden Plas - Beyond Daylight
