I listen to metal mainly, bands such as Chimaira, Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying, Fear Factory, music with fast double bass drumming.

The CX300 were my first real headphones that weren't cheap Sony ones really. I've been using them at my PC for music and sometimes gaming and would like some full size headphones which have similar, tight, powerful bass for around £50, if possible. The CX300 will be kept for my iPod.

I definitely have no intentions of buying an amp, they will be plugged straight into my X-Fi XtremeMusic sound card.

I recently bought and returned a Sennheiser HD485, the increased detail in music was nice, but they really lacked the bass I was hoping for.
After looking around this forum for a few days the only headphones I see which are close to fitting my needs are the Equation Audio RP-21, but I fear they will be lacking in bass again.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I had your same fears and opted for MS-1s, so check them out as well as the SR60 and the SR80 (most bass out of these 3). Keep going up the Alessandro and Grado line if you want to spend more, even though the RP-21 are noted to have very good punchy bass.

And frankly I think you'd be better off without As I Lay Crying or Killswitch Engage. Also screw Dragonforce, Atreyu, and all the other poser mosh metal/hardcore/christian (white metal? lol)/pikachu theme music garbage. Listen to some real metal.

Fear Factory and Lamb of God are ok though.

i also might add that i listen to ALL of the same music you listed, and my dt770's sound wonderful with them. Although, i do like the sr60's representation of the raw guitar sound. Listened to "Laid to Rest" on the 60's and i couldnt help playing some serious air guitar!

I've seen quite a few people saying the DT770s have nice bass, but quite boomy unless you have an amp, is this true? I suppose I could get a *cheap* amp if it makes a difference.

Apparently the SR60/80 and MS-1 headphones also lack bass. Music just hasn't been the same to me without it ever since I got the CX300, they turned me into a basshead I guess.

Also, I've heard all the "true" metal arguments against "fake" metal, and it doesn't mean much to me. While I listen to nu metal (rarely) through to death, there's bands from each genre that I like and dislike.

Definitely disregard the post about buying MS-1's. I love Grados, but they're probably not what you're looking for.

Also, the RP-21's are definitely not lacking in bass so no need to fear. I actually really liked the RP-21's. A really awesome phone overall (especially when considering the price). Oh, I got great isolation when using them.

Finally, listen to whatever music you want

Glad you already know that

Well I got the RP-21s and the bass isn't bad, nice and tight, but easily overpowered by loud guitars.

I've also found that open headphones are more comfortable, and better for gaming (hearing where people are around you).

Is it possible to get the sound I'm looking for in my price range? If not I will be sticking with these until I can afford a more expensive pair, such as the Beyerdynamic DT990 or Ultrasone Proline 2500, which are supposed to have good, tight bass. Probably an amp too.
