I've had them for years and they finally died a few days ago.

Currently using some generic earphones I found for about $3 and they sound like absolute ****.

Appreciate the help!

You might check out the SoundMAGIC E10 and the VSONIC VSD3S. They are both pretty darn good. I really like the E10 a lot. Smooth, detailed, with fantastic bass. Worth checking out in your price range.

3/5 stars on Amazon..? Is there something I'm missing?

You don't just look at the average rating, you look into why such ratings were given and make up your mind on each of those.

A common reason for the low ratings is "reliability," but considering even on head-fi people come up and claim they don't abuse their headphones but they break anyway, but then they can't accurately describe how they coil the cables.

Another is how some reviews point to a rather thin sound, but that can have a lot to do with the seal, and many of the reviews practically sound like they just assumed that's what they sound like instead of making sure they're getting a proper seal.

I thought there would be some kind of consensus as to what earphones are the "best" or at least a top three.

The same earphones tend to show up on different people's lists repeatedly. So, I wouldn't say there is no consensus. There just is some latitude in people's lists, that's all. But the good earphones do tend to come up over and over again. For obvious reasons.   ---)

Alright, well I ordered the M7Ps so if they're not as good as my HD600's I'm going to hold you accountable.

Why would you even expect something that cheap to be as good as the HD600. I use the ASG-1.3 to have an HD650 on the go and it's $300 new.

If you're paying $35 you can only get $35 worth, regardless of how some can punch above their price point or diminishing returns on higher tier products. Even if you can make a Civic beat a Ferrari at a drag strip that same Civic would be totally useless on a circuit against an S2000, much less a Ferrari. At best, you can get an S2000 which gives you the long-hood, low slung cockpit of a Ferrari V12 GT and mcuh of the sound (and peaky torque cure) of a 9000rpm Ferrari V8.

Hey, they're not cheap. They're the same price as my CX400s and those sounded great.

My S6 camera isn't as good as my 5DMKIV but it's still a great camera.

Read what I said again. I didn't say they were rubbish at that price point, I just said it's not exactly fair to compare a $35 earphone to a $400 headphone. If the diminishing returns were so bad at that range then why did you spend $400 on the HD600 when $35 gets you really close to it?

Hell I had the CX300II and the bass was loose (though not overpowering) vs the HD600, cables were microphonic, fit wasn't right...eventually ended up with an ASG-1.3 and a VSD3S as my beater.

I mean, I use a dedicated sound card and amp for my HD 600's and only play FLAC files.

There's no such option on my phone, so the sound quality of the earphones simply has to match the hardware they're connected to.

It's also a case of cognitive dissonance - you can't always get 100% perfect audio so you try to enjoy everything equally.

I listen to my really crappy laptop speakers sometimes and I'm not upset about it.

But like I said, I'm expecting these M7P's to max out my phone's capabilities.
