I just found my old AKG K601s having been out of the headphone game for a lot of years and thought I should get something cheap so I could use them again with my laptop and iPhone. I mostly stream music through Spotify. Not looking to spend a lot as I don't know how much I'll use them. Really grateful for any recommendations.

Does your current iPhone come with a headphone jack or does it just have the lightning port?
Budget?

Just the lightning port. Budget around $200. Also ideally I’d like something that will work plugged in and also is portable to a degree so I can sit outside and listen to it (not carry it around)

You're envisioning leaving your phone or laptop stationary indoors, while bringing the DAC and headphones to the porch to listen, or something like this?

I'm pretty happy with my Qudelix 5K ($100-$110 or thereabouts). I dunno just what kind of range it's capable of because I live in a studio apartment, so it doesn't drop the connection when I'm at the farthest indoors lol.

Sorry no, I meant portable in the sense I'd sit on the porch with the phone and amplifier, don't need bluetooth or anything. Or at least I didn't think so. I didn't even know such things existed!

Ah gotcha. You mentioned the MacBook Pro as a potential source so my mind went to something capable of wireless transmissions.

But yeah. Bluetooth DACs are a thing now.

That said, in such a situation, I don’t know how the 5K’s basic playback controls would work with Spotify because I don’t use streaming services. I do know that they play, pause and skip as intended when I use my phone’s stock offline music player app.

I’ll leave recommendations for phone-sizes DACs to others.

A Lightning to headphone jack adapter might(?) work with the 120-Ohm AKG K601.
Just not sure of the K601's power demands.
