For me, Karma is an incredible player.

I'm in accord with faichu's appraisal. The Karma has its own equalizer. It _does_ sound dynamic and clean. It's also reasonably sturdy, _and_, in the event that it becomes faulty, there are many used Karmas out there that can easily be scavenged to repair it.

A little off topic, but has anyone successfully replaced the click wheel (or whatever it's called on the Karma)? Mine is busted, and so much of the functionality is lost.

eerire,

9 times out of 10 the wheel is fixable. The trick is to line it up correctly onto the board with just enough superglue (not too much though). I had to fix mine twice. After the second attempt I never had another problem with it.

For anyone looking to buy a Karma for the first time, keep in mind that the original batteries are all at least 3 years old by now. All I'm saying is it may require some minor surgery to end up with a modernized Karma and decent battery life.

If you're game, I think it's worth it. (Especially since the TrekStor vibez is out of stock everywhere.) Check out some of the 32 GB flash modded Karma instructions around the web. I believe even 160 GB ZIF drive Karmas are achievable.

Good luck.

Now this is REALLY intriguing! I'll give the crazy glue fix a try... thanks!

iriver H120 might be a good alternative - there's Rockbox, it has an optical out, etc, etc.

But yes, the Karma does pwn.

Sorry, I got preoccupied with the scroll wheel and forgot to answer your question. The Karma does sound great... I just needed more space. If you can live with 20GB or do the mod to put in a bigger hard drive then it could be your ticket.

Just don't drop it! That scroll wheel is very fragile!
