Can anyone suggest a fairly inexpensive cd source for the bedroom? I'd like to keep it at $300.00 or less. I'm thinking of a micro-system(CD only, no tape), or portable CDP(with AC capability). This will mainly be used for headphone listening. Thanks in advance.

If max. fidelity for cd playhback, is the goal, I would suggest a ac cd player(non-portable player) and headphone amp. If you need speaker use, then I guess your stuck with a micro-system.

Definitely check out the AMC CD8B. It's an excellent cd player for the money. Great sound, a little under $200 if you look at shopping.yahoo.com. It is built excellent and is comparable to a $300-$400 NAD cd player. The opamps can also be easily replaced as they are DIP-8 for improved sound.

You can have a META42 built for you with the remaining cash.

The AMC cd8b is discontinued, I believe. You may find one on the internet, if you look around. But I wouldn't pay much more than $200, if that. Used would probably be a better deal.

I have two cd8b's, and think they really good players for the money. Though I have to say, it does respond well to tweaking, if your so inclined.
