i think i put my sony mdr f1 through too much volume, and now the right earpiece is 'fluttering' when theres too much bass, even at low volumes....

ive bought another sony, the mdr sa1000, but when i put it on i realized why sony designed the mdr f1 to be as open air as it is, to stop the resonating sardine can effect in headphones such as the sa1000...there is also a pitiful amount of bass, and way too much brightness.... so now im selling the sa1000 off as second hand, and im looking for something to replace the f1 ....

for one thing the sa1000 was very very very comfortable to wear, even more so than the f1 due to the wide headband distributing its weight ... and i tend to keep my headphones on for many hours at a time, so comfort is a big priority to me

what should i be looking for and how much am i looking to spend?

as far as comfort, the denon d1000s seem to be some of the most comfortable cans out there. They cost ~$100 and produce some very good sound across the spectrum. There was a review that included them... the review of 5 closed cans? Lemme see if I can find it. Is that sorta in your price range?

How do they fair with rock music, when you tried?

my price range... hmm thats a tough one...

i'd say no more expensive than my f1, and probably not any cheaper than the sa1000, unless these headphones are some sort of bang for your buck miracle or something

looking around it seems that people are generally more focused on closed-style headphones which are heavier and maybe less comfortable?

i think that the akg k601, grado sr325 , audio technica ad700 and sennheiser hd 959 are somewhat like the mdr f1 in terms of price, and how much they weigh , and possibly by extension how long i can keep them on before i get a headache...

or should i like, hook my sa1000 to a cd player playing white noise and leave it running for a couple of days? will burn in even have an effect at that kind of price range...

haven't tried them actually

I always use the qualifier "seem" when talking about phones that I've researched extensively but haven't tried in person.

any other full size open headphones which weigh in at ~200g? basically, what are the most comfy cans you guys have tried... those nights of sore ears still haunt me

name some headphones which once you put on, you do not want to take off because of how well it fits and also because how it sounds

k, because I found that I can't recommend 'phones I've personally tried for at least 10 hours of use...Some product may be preferred by one person while hated by the next - for example, HD600, HD650 is highly praised, but I personally couldn't stand it.
I know that you want to be helpful, but recommending 'phones that you have never tried can lead to misinformation for the buyer, which we don't want to do.
I made this mistake before and I got lashed for it - so I'm just letting you know, so you won't have to go through what I had to go through!

Edit:
you probably want to make it clear that you're recommending phones that you have never tried by:
"I have never personally tried [D1000], but based on reviews, this headphone might be best for your usage"

the sa1000 is in a completely inferior class to the f1 , it looked like it had some of the f1's traits , but other than being a tad bit lighter with its grip on your skull, it has nothing on the f1 ... worst audio purchase ive made to date, ive had cheaper headphones which sounded better

the sa1000 and sa5000 also lack the f1's springy headband , it makes you feel like wearing some clunky contraption compared to the natural ergonomics of the f1 ... in that aspect im leaning towards the audio technica headphones , like 2 headbands must be better than just one

I think the HD580 would work well here. It is very comfy, and is not too heavy. Look for a Beyerdynamic headband to put on them. It really makes them even more comfortable.

I believe sennheiser's flagship line went HD580->HD600->HD650

Sennheiser has reallllly confusing numbering system.

The HD 580 is an entire different product line than the 555/595. Actually, the 595 would fit your needs nicely. The 580 needs an amp.

aah... sorry for the noob question but cant i just turn the volume way up instead of using an amp?

also will i be able to modify the 595 with aftermarket headbands etc, or a longer cord?

Actually, the 580 needs a lot of power. You would not even be able to get moerate volume from them. What are you using as a source? Ipod or something?
