I have been using the standard ipod headphones for the last 5 years already and feel like I need an upgrade. Ever since I heard the sound from a pair of AKG headphones, I don't want to look back.

I saved around $400 so far for a pair of headphones...however I am not sure which pair to get.

I need a pair that emphasizes the following:

-Great highs and lows
-Deep bass that can emphasize lows without distortion
-Non-punchy bass that can hit all frequencies clearly

Not sure if mids are emphasized for rock?

As I noted, I am going to be listening to 40% alternative rock, 35% trance music, 20% house music, and 5% classical on these headphones. I would like to use the song "Lux Aeterna" by Clint Mansell as a reference point for bass and clarity. Hearing that low, thunderous bass and crisp string instruments is my inspiration to get new headphones. Although it is a classical song, I would like to hear that clarity with rock and some trance tracks. I am not a "basshead", however I AM a fan of bass in the sense of hearing that bass from all sides of the spectrum...especially the lows.

So, with all that being said, I would appreciate any suggestions as to which headphones I should consider.

Thanks!

If you are not looking for something portable the AKG K550 is nice sounding.  I find the headphone really uncomfortable, but with a little added padding it is quite nice.

If you can find a pair the Denon AH-D2000 is another amazing headphone in your price point.
