My old cd player broke down recently and I am looking for a replacement. I am using a MX-500 for listening and I do not plan to use amp. anti-skip is not over important but good to have. I want it below $100.

Are you willing to consider used or new old stock? If so

Sony D-25s
or
Panasonic 570

Are both highly recommended. (I'm a D-25 guy, myself)

Also, do you want Portable (use it while walking/running) or Transportable (might use while flying, but mainly just want to have it when I "get there")?

As far as new only, in that price range, Panasonic seems to get the most votes these days (anyone want to correct me?)

Like everyone else (almost) I bought my D-25s as New-Old-Stock off Silicon Salvage on eBay for about $50 shipped. I had to come up with my own battery (I used a camcorder battery I had) and power adapter and have a pocket for it in my tool bag (I'm a computer geek) and take it to which ever office I have to work at. Besides its sound (much better than my wifes D-556 and Panisonic 284), it has a metal body and has been pretty rugged (I haven't dropped it, but my bag get toss around some.)

You can find them in the For Sale forum often enough with a battery and power adapter for under $60. Same for the Pani 570 @ $80.

If you want to go with a new one from a store, your about guaranteed that it will have 40sec skip protection (most can't be turned off now). Also, don't use the In-Line volume control as it degrades the sound as well.

Oh, and before I forget: "Welcome to Head-Fi, sorry about your wallet."

BTW, is it true the D25s doesn't play burned discs? (CDR or CDRW)

I burn mine slow (1x-4x) and my D25s reads them just fine. Fastest disk I've tried was done at 8x. FWIW, I think all were TDK media. I find that the slower I burn the cds (on a PC), the better compatibility the disks have with old players. I also have an old sony CDP-32 that I've held on to and it reads these disks, too.

i burn at 8x, no problems at all with the 25S, the D-33 and D-141 do act up every so often though.
