Finally, my account on these forums is up and I am so glad I found a place where I can nerd it up on audio with others without being seen as eccentric.

Anyway, I have owned my pair of Sennheiser HD575s for a few years now and last week I was shopping for a new pair of noise canceling headphones. I thought that perhaps active cancellation was the way to go, but after seeing the options (Bose QC plus a myriad of cheap phones), I was convinced sealed was the way to go.

And so I researched for 2 days. Actually I researched only 1 day and the second day was spent trying to find a cheaper price for my Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro. But now that I have them, I think they are worth every penny (bought from headphone.com).

The misconception that the 770s are too boomy are wrong, at least to me. Perhaps I am being biased since I love my 575 (frequency response between the two are quite similar across the whole board). They look absolutely awesome to boot!

I was very tempted (now that the 880s are out) to buy another pair of Beyerdynamics. I am feeling the same feeling I felt when I first got my Senns, this feeling of musical rebirth. I especially like the corded cable (albiet a bit short), but I wish this cable is detachable (manual doesn't say it is and I'm not going to yank on it to see).

Velour ear pads are very much like those on the Senn 580s and 600s, much more stiff that those on the 570s, 575s, and 590s (bionetic designs). The headband is of metallic construction and the padding on the headband is removable.

I really can't give a review of them yet (as they are still quite new), but if any of you are in UCLA and you see a guy wearing the all black (with white lettering) Beyers, it's most likely me. =D

Welcome to Head-Fi, sorry about your wallet, sanity, and future life. It really depends on personel preference as to which you would like. I really like the comfort associated with the Senn hd580 and 600 but the Beyers are nice too.

actually i have owned both the hd575 senns and the beyer dt770pro.

my first pair was the senn - it was ok , but then you discover more and more on the sound preference you want.

i think you will like the 880 more than the 770pro.

truer words have not been spoken. that's why the forum exists - to exchange ideas.

don't worry, you won't change your mind until later. (I keep saying, "This too shall pass"). You might buy the HD800 (whenever it comes out) and then you'll be saying things like, "What was I thinking?"

It's absolutely normal.

I think you'll find as many varied opinions of the DT770's bass as there are different headphone generalities. Boomy? I don't think so. Bloated, or slightly bloated? I am of that opinion. This is, of course, in comparison to other headphones. Throw in a really good amp and it may change. Me?, I'd would be adding some cotten batting to see if I can lessen the bass bloat and hopefully increasing the bass impact. but that's just me.

Congrats on your purchase. may it give you many years of faithful service. just live with them for a long while and try not to be taken in by other headphones. otherwise you'll be owning more than one set.

Well, if you look down the page I've just discovered the DT770 Pro's myself. I use them with a Corda HA-1 amp, and boomy couldnt not be further from the truth, prominent certainly, but definetly fast and slamming.

I can tell you now, I probably wont upgrade to the 880, as I've discovered for myself I prefer the "coloured" sound that audiophiles probably loath.

Their sound resembles that of my Rotel RA-01 and Mission M51 speakers, and I love the sound of those. Very involving.

Enjoy the music

Congrats on your purchase. My thoughts on the DT770pro's run along the same lines as wallijonn. Bloated not boomy. You really do need an amp to hear these phones perform.
