Can someone recommend a good live jazz or blues club in new york suitable for a group of about 8 people to hit up after work on Friday? I'd like a place with low cover (or no cover). Someone recommended Terra Blues on Bleecker Street, but I know there are a ton of great clubs in the city. We're looking for an inexpensive, relaxed place to hang out after work, so places like Birdland and Blue Note are not going to work. We want somewhere where we can just walk in and hang out. TIA.

my favorite club in all of NYC is most definitely Tonic on the lower east side.

the jazz fare tends to be adventurous, exploratory and exhilerating. the cover charge is most always reasonable, the drinks are fine (nothing spectacular), and the vibe is great.

the subtonic lounge, downstairs is no-cover, good for haning out... but i spend most of the time upstairs.

of course... i've been going there much less frequently, in this toddler era of my life.

it's been awhile since i last hit the knitting factory, but if it's still alive i'd recommend it as well.

too bad it's friday, otherwise i'd say on mondays go see freaking LES PAUL at the Iridium Room on Broadway. come to think of it that's a decent place on any night, so keep that one in mind as well if you are in the Times Square area. And honestly, BB King's isn't so bad either.

the knit was one of my favorites until tonic popped up and requisitioned most of the best acts. there are still still some great shows there, but its new digs and its evolution into a full-fledged, bicoastal media conglomerate have sort of diluted the talent pool, not to mention that feeling of intimacy.

but hey... the knit still gets a big thumbs-up from me.
