It has been awhile since we have discussed rolling heads.

List a handful of tubes that have survived your culling experiments. As of now some of my favs are:

Amperex EL84/6BQ5 Bugle Boy Holland 1958

RCA 7025 Clear top (sidegetter)

Amperex 7062 *PQ* USA (orange label)
Amperex 7062 *PQ* Holland (white label)

Mullard ECC82/12AU7 old shield logo

Mullard ECC81/12AT7 Bugle Boy Holland 1957

RCA 5751 Command 1960

Don't be shy, list your favorites. I'm sure there are plenty of sleepers out there that can be picked up for a reasonable price.

Sylvania Gold Brand, Gold Plate, Triple Mica 5751 is #1 favorite signal tube - black plate jhs is second.

JJ EL84's make an excellent (and cheap) match to this tube. I haven't experimented much with the el84's outside of cheapies.

I've tried most of the popular signal tubes (from joe's tube lore and nick's mg head tube rolling guide) and alot of unknown tubes as well (usually crappy).

Raytheon 7729

GE 6072 3 Mica Black Plate

Tung-SOL 6681

A European 7025 with the manufacturer's name missing

Amperex EL84 Neerleen Plant

Valvo EL84

I currently have the BoB-1 a custom SET Ultra-linear Headphone amp that uses the same tube compliment as the MG head.

my favorites:
for the 6BQ5/EL84...just the JJ Tesla, I tried others but the difference is very subtle if any...
for the small guy....GE5751WA NOS (black plates triple micas), and the legendary Raytheon windmill getter

I haven't had the chance to roll very many tubes myself but I have a cryo'd RCA Command 5751 and Sylvania black plate 5751 and of them I like the Sylvania best. It's such a great tube. For driver tubes I just got a pair of the Ei Elite Gold EL84's which are quite nice.

I noticed timoteus mentioned a 12AU7. Are you using that in the MG Head? I talked to N@Z in PM not long ago he has used a 12AU7 in the MG Head before. I know they have lower gain than even the 5751's but I'm curious to know if this is ok from an electrical standpoint and if this can cause any kind of damage or be stressful on parts in the amp?? Anyone?

Telefunken ECC 801S.

This is in the 12AT7 family. I kept the tube even though I no longer have the amp in case I find another to make a pair for my Zotl.

My second favorite is an RCA 7025; I also have one of these NOS, just in case...

SeanH, Joe Lau has certified that the MG Head likes any 12A*7 tube.

No kidding! Does that include 5814's then too? It's basically identical to a 12AU7, right? If so I have an RCA Command 5814 I'd love to try. Thanks!
