Well, that's good - 4 years of primary use is a good run.
Overall the Ortofon family is quite neutral, but there are variances within the line. For me the the Kontra C was pretty close to neutral, but still a touch on the warm side. As far as a family comparison, it's easily the warmest Ortofon I've had (MC20, Kontra a, Jubilee, Windfeld). Still, they're all very linear and sound very clean. Now if you take something like the Benz Ref 3 - it's more unabashedly warm. It sounds creamy and a bit colored, but is wonderful nonetheless in its character musical flow.
The Windfeld so far is a touch on the analytical side, if anything - but then it's hard to characterize this cart yet because in some ways it just transcends what you could expect from a vinyl disc.
I've had the Windfeld in my system for a couple months - probably still some hours to break in to go (I got it with ~40-50 but it had been dormant for a year). The cantilever does seem to ride at a rather high angle relative to other carts. It does have a significant output drop from the Kontra C, in fact subjectively it sounds like more than a 6dB drop, though the spec sheets specify only ~5dB. The Windfeld plays a bit lower than the Ref 3 which is measured at 0.24mV. Some hum is present in my system as well (probably from my tube hybrid phono stage), but it's low enough to be irrelevant once the music starts playing.
Relax, my Kontra is over 4 years old and it was simply its time... Jeez, I made it sound like it died in its sleep.
Curious about your impression about the Windfeld Vs Kontra C. I've always found the Kontra C to be really neutral and not warm at all.
Are you running the Windfeld now or was that just a demo?
My only worry is that the output of the Windfeld versus my Kontra is lower (0.3 compared to 0.5) and with the hum already present in my system it won't make things worse as I'll have to have the volume knob cranked up a bit.
