Relax, my Kontra is over 4 years old and it was simply its time... Jeez, I made it sound like it died in its sleep.
Curious about your impression about the Windfeld Vs Kontra C. I've always found the Kontra C to be really neutral and not warm at all.

Are you running the Windfeld now or was that just a demo?

My only worry is that the output of the Windfeld versus my Kontra is lower (0.3 compared to 0.5) and with the hum already present in my system it won't make things worse as I'll have to have the volume knob cranked up a bit.

Well, that's good - 4 years of primary use is a good run.

Overall the Ortofon family is quite neutral, but there are variances within the line. For me the the Kontra C was pretty close to neutral, but still a touch on the warm side. As far as a family comparison, it's easily the warmest Ortofon I've had (MC20, Kontra a, Jubilee, Windfeld). Still, they're all very linear and sound very clean. Now if you take something like the Benz Ref 3 - it's more unabashedly warm. It sounds creamy and a bit colored, but is wonderful nonetheless in its character musical flow.

The Windfeld so far is a touch on the analytical side, if anything - but then it's hard to characterize this cart yet because in some ways it just transcends what you could expect from a vinyl disc.

I've had the Windfeld in my system for a couple months - probably still some hours to break in to go (I got it with ~40-50 but it had been dormant for a year). The cantilever does seem to ride at a rather high angle relative to other carts. It does have a significant output drop from the Kontra C, in fact subjectively it sounds like more than a 6dB drop, though the spec sheets specify only ~5dB. The Windfeld plays a bit lower than the Ref 3 which is measured at 0.24mV. Some hum is present in my system as well (probably from my tube hybrid phono stage), but it's low enough to be irrelevant once the music starts playing.

I recently had the pleasure of hosting Herr Woschnick when he stopped by my place on his way to a world cup game, it was a flying visit but he had time enough to install a TW Acustic Raven 10.5 tonearm of his manufacture on my table, a Raven AC. It's a real slick piece of engineering and thus far, proving to be a worthy successor to my previous Phantom and Tri Planar arms.

Upgraded from my previous Voyd Valdi to it's bigger brother - the tri-motor "The Voyd". Tonearm is the titanium Alphason HR100S (rewired with Kondo silver) and a Shelter 901 cartridge.

I just acquired a PS Audio GCPH phono preamplifier, which is fully balanced from input to output and am loving it. I don't have a MC cartridge yet, but it sure makes my Luxman P-405/Ortofon OM-40S sound great through my WA22 balanced amplifier. I will probably upgrade the turntable completely before moving to an MC cartridge, if at all. From what I understand a MC cartridge really makes a difference when you are going the balanced route, but I really like what I have going now so no hurry.

I have a Timber Nation 2" Maple Isolation Platform in transit for the Luxman, and I am also really enjoying my VPI HW-16.5 Record Cleaning Machine, along with a Zerostat 3 Anti-Static Pistol, AudioQuest Carbon Fiber Record Brush, vintage Discwasher SC-2 Stylus Care Kit, and Clearaudio Clever Clamp.

Uh, no, a (good) MC makes a (huge) difference no matter what. The OM40 is great and all but upgrade to say the Ortofon Cadenza Red or Lyra Delos and your ears wont know what hit them.

I agree completely; when researching balanced output phono stages there were a lot of assertions that it made an even bigger difference with a balanced system.

I like Ortofon products, and that Cadenza looks nice. If I ever change out my deck I will take another look at it. What do you think of the Rondo Blue?

At least I have the preamp for it now
