hi im new to these forums but i have been reading for a while now. i recently decided to buy an amp, and was testing my portable cd player a sony d-66 line out without the amp to make sure it worked. when i plugged my headphone into the d-66 lineout directly i didnt get a quite smooth sound. instead i got a normal volume sound, but the singers voices and bass were extremely staticky and unclear. none of my other cd players are like this in the line out. whenever i plug headphones straight into lineout there is a low volume sound but atleast it is clear. i don't know what is wrong, and was wondering if anyone could give me more information on what might be going on. thx

Welcome to Head-Fi, oggalieboogalie!

I don't quite understand the term «staticky» and am unsure about «unclear» – could it be that the sound is distorted, like from an overloaded amplifier? It's possible that this happens to the D-66 line out because of the low headphone impedance. A line out usually is loaded with 10 kiloohm or more, so the ~30 ohm of a portable headphone could cause clipping – don't know if its normal with this specific model, but I never noticed such a behavior with other portable devices so far. Try to connect the line out to any high impedance load, ideally a stereo amplifier or receiver. If the same thing happens, there's something wrong with the line out.

thx jazz hehe. i also found it strange, becuase i never experienced it with a portable either. the thing is....when i tried hooking it up to a larger stereo system, the problem was gone. atleast i hope it was gone, i couldnt tell. however, my stereo system isnt that great, and the sound isn't audiophile quality. i'm just trying to find out if there is a technical reason it might do that and if it is normal? i have a headphone amp on the way, and am now a bit worried that the sound won't be top notch quality and it might be affected by this. anymore help would be appreciated! thx
