You definitely need Celtic Frost and Metallica. And before you say it...don't even start with me about Metallica sucking. Yeah, they suck now. But Kill 'em All is the thrash album that all the rest built upon. Any argument to the contrary is just elitism gone too far.

I guess I'm not too far gone. I love the top 3; Sabbath, Priest , Maiden and Metallica too and have many of their albums. I also like Celtic Frost. I still have Into the Pandemonium but I've lost the Megatherion album somehow.

I won't have an argument about it, I'm just going to state that I disagree. I'm not knocking Kill 'em All in any way; I like a lot of Mustaine's body of work.

For the key bands section, you might you want to consider a few of the other 70s acts aside from BS that were relatively important. That hard rock/metal line gets pretty blurry at times, but I feel that Deep Purple/Rainbow deserve to be up there. If not for In Rock and Fireball, then certainly for Machine Head and even moreso for Made in Japan.

In the same breath I'm making a point to exclude Zeppelin from the list. As much as I love them they didn't cross the line (in my mind, at least).

Let's see...you're probably going to want to put Helloween up there. Keeper's 1 and 2 were quite influential.

Now this is a bit of a stretch--but you might want to consider Fates Warning. FW served as a major influence for Dream Theater, and they more or less lead a generation of progressive metal bands. And despite the thread's predilection for the heavier side of things, the other half of metal is equally big.

Well, my brain's now set to Iron Maiden (Doctor Doctor, rockin some B sides) so I'm done typing for a while.

Up the Irons!

I wasn't arguing that it's the best thrash album.

I'd attribute more of that to Watchtower than Fates Warning, but I guess that isn't a very popular opinion.

Do you read posts before you reply? I just said it wasn't the best thrash album. It is arguably the most important, though.

And then you're going to put a Testament album in the list? Right.

I'm exiting this thread and sticking to where I belong.

I actually thought about Watchtower and, also maybe Queensryche, after I posted that. But I went with FW because I remember reading something from Portnoy about seeing FW live and loving them--and now I remember.

If you look in the bonus DVD booklet for the Awaken the Guardian re-release, the liner notes are written by him. He concludes with, "Very often fans and critics credit Dream Theater for creating a whole new genre of progressive metal music in the late 80s/early 90s...but the truth is Fates Warning were doing it years before us."

Portnoy is giving them credit at least. Someone go scour the net in search of Myung's feelings on the matter

I wasn't arguing best/worst either, I just don't think it's the most important thrash album. But we can agree to disagree and bang our heads against the stage, right?

Hmmm. My favorite metal bands are Ion Dissonance, Misery Index, Nightwish, Opeth, Pain Of Salvation, and Sonata Arctica.

Also a fan of Blind Guardian, Meshuggah, Symphony X, etc...

Personally...i would add Death to the key bands...they may not have been the sole creators of the genre, just like we cant' say metallica "invented thrash metal" and so on...but they have been indeed an extremely influential band in the death metal scene...

And neither is it the most important. Kill 'em All is like Scream Bloody Gore, it's one of the first albums of its subgenre but you can see clearly that the thrash sound is still in its infancy stage when it was released. I wouldn't say that it's the album which defined the thrash sound, Show No Mercy is more worthy of that title.
