That and it gives me an excuse to listen to my 3rd favorite megadeth album again

Well, first of all, the original RIP sounds way better than the remaster. I downloaded the remasters for Peace Sells, Rust, and So Far So Good to see how they compared to my originals, and deleted them after one listen. Just awful. The Killing Is My Business remaster is of course an improvement, there was no where to go with that one but up. The censored version of These Boots on that record though is just stupid. I have the proper version that's not 90% bleep on the mega Hidden Treasures album.

I'll have to check out the vinyl of Rust. The original CD version sounds good, but it doesn't come close to the awesomeness of the Japanese first pressing of Peace Sells.

yeah, i wish i could a original version of Peace Sells, all ive got is the remaster, and for that needledrop, there is a ton of hiss, which is mostly absent on the Rust in Peace one, so i dont really want to use it...maybe fleabay it is..and yeah, Killing is my Business sounds quite a bit better with the remaster, and i agree on these boots, it would have been better to jsut leave it off the cd.

I dont really like countdown to extinction, though endgame aint bad. You really should check out Peace Sells...and Who's Buying, or Rust in Peace, or Killing is my Business, those are my top 3 megadeth albums
smily_headphones1.gif
and if i had to pick one i think it would actually be RiP, though Peace Sells was my first love

thats actually kind of a funny story though, becuase i really like the albums i listed, i figured i would like countdown to extinction, so i decided to splurge and buy the MoFi version for 30 bucks...then it turned out i wasnt such a fan

I actually discovered this album a long time ago, and I really enjoyed the production so I thought that the remaster would be horrible. Turns out to be wrong, Relapse managed to make it sound even better. The vocals are absolutely monolithic. That album is tied with Slumber of the Sullen Eyes by Demigod, Nespithe by Demilich, and Internal Caustic Torments by Wombbath for the best OSDM album.

I approve of this. The Fins really nailed it to hell and back when it came to DM.

Rust in Peace, Peace Sells, and Killing is My Business are the best starting points for Megadeth, in that order.

Take note that the remasters are actually also remixes, as Dave re-recorded some parts for Rust in Peace. I find that the remasters sound worse than the original press versions.

The remasters to avoid are the ones for the definitive early Megadeth albums, So Far So Good So What, Rust In Peace, and Peace Sells. They are brick walled and all of the dynamics of the originals are gone. What's worse, some parts are actually re-recorded, and the tone of some songs is just different and not right. Worse in every way. Last I checked on Amazon, the original records are readily available used for a couple of bucks each. In my humble opinion, Peace Sells is the best Megadeth album ever, with RIP a close second. So Far So Good is a bit unfocused.

The remaster for Countdown is a tougher question to answer. The original is good but not great sounding. It's got a lot of bass, but the mids where all of the guitars live seem recessed and too far back in the mix, and the highs stand out a bit too much. It's a somewhat thin sounding record overall.

The remaster brings out the mids and vocals, but its too loud and it sounds a bit bland because the highs have basically disappeared behind the wall of guitars. The Mofi Gold version strikes a nice balance between the two, and is the version to get if you want the best sounding Countdown.

It's not my favorite Deth album, but its much better than everything that followed it, and High Speed Dirt and Psychotron are just damn enjoyable songs. Captive Honour is also a truly great song, and contains perhaps the best Marty/Dave guitar duel.

The more recent albums have been very hit or miss. Youthanasia is mediocre, Cryptic Writings is pretty terrible, Risk is just god awful. I actually like The World Needs A Hero - well most of it. System Has Failed I liked when it was first released but it has aged badly. United Abominations is probably my favorite Deth album since Countdown. Really no bad points, and I love Burnt Ice. Endgame is about half good, half bad.

Damn, I need to catch up with all these remastered records. I remember trying to compare the remaster to the original for RiP, and I much preferred the remaster, but that was on YouTube for probably a 192kbps.

Do you guys provide a list of some really well remastered old classics? Any metal genre.

Since ive already paid for those three megadeth albums, i dont really want to buy them again, but since i have paid for them, im not necessarily against acquiring other versions

so i went and found a original japanese pressing of peace sells, and it blows both pbthal's needledrop and the remaster out of the water, though i dont have the original american pressing, i doubt it would be better. Im having a hard time finding an original version of RiP, but pbthal's rip on that one is excellent i think.

And even if i dont like it, the MoFi release of countdown to extinction does sounds pretty spectacular

and its all gold and such lol

The Japanese first pressing is indeed stellar. I have the old American retail CD, and its not even a contest. The original retail is better than the remaster, but the Japanese version is just on a different level.

The orignal non-remaster of RIP is available in FLAC, if you look.

I don't really know of any amazing metal remasters, but there are some re-recordings that are great. If you'd like to hear the old Arch Enemy songs with Angela on vocals and modern production, check out The Root Of All Evil. Dimmu Borgir's re-recording of Stormblast sounds great. Hypocrisy remastered and re-recorded their early songs for the Ten Years of Chaos album, which are a big improvement over the originals. Catch 22 on the other hand didn't need to be re-recorded, and sucks compared to the original.

now that ive heard the japanese pressing, i really want to own it, but unfortunately when i search for it all i find are links to torrent files, which i obviously already got lol but you're right, it sounds amazing, probably easily as good as the MoFi version of Countdown to Extinction, though that might jsut be my preference for the album
