the stones have been recommended to me by many people over the years. just to check them out i got the remasters of "let it bleed" and "past darkly". some of their well known songs i like: "gimme shelter" "monkey man" "paint it black", but i have heard them so many times i'm a little sick of them. the rest? i didn't really care for the other tunes. many of them sounded like unfinished filler, and the production was often horrendous. i know these are old recordings, but why on "let it bleed" do some songs sound fine and others clip and sound bad? "standing in the shadows" (i think it's called) just reminded me of elvis' cheesiest work with the go-go dancer big band sound.

i've had these cd's for a few months now, and i have a hard time getting through them. they've got some good tunes, but i just don't get the appeal of the stones.

Well, that's okay, it's not like they're as good as the Beatles.

hey redshifter, it sounds like you've been getting the shaft around this forum lately!!! Maybe it's time for a little revenge????

Seriously, I have never really gotten a bad recommendation off of this board, I just choose carefully what I check out, my music tastes are pretty straight forward and I will ask alot of questions before buying anything...

As far as the stones, I could probably get away with a greatest hits album and be done with them, it's too bad I don't look at most other bands that way (pink floyd, sigur ros, radiohead) because then I just have to have everything that they put out. So I guess in a way you could consider yourself lucky in that respect, you won't be pissing any more of your money on the stones.......

I think the Stones wrote some of the best singles around - that's why you can grab the "Hot Rocks" greatest hits package and pretty much have it all. When I bought their individual albums, I was always a bit disappointed (except for "Exile on Mainstreet," "Sticky Fingers" and, later, "Some Girls" is an excellent album. Just Grab "Hot Rocks" (a must) and I think you can almost call your Stones collection complete (maybe toss in "More Hot Rocks".) And, yeah, I was always a Beatles guy!

Better check your source on this one. I have this remaster and none of the songs clip on either of my SACD players nor on my auto CD deck.

BAH! The Beatles were a gang of losers. The Stones ROCK!!!

And regrading the sonic quality of the Stones, what do you want, rock and roll, or The Alan Parson Project? Check your equipment. The SACD remasters sound great.

DITTO except for the Beatles part. Get the beatles "One" and you can call that collection complete also. Same thing with Motley Crue, greatest hits will cover them well.

AC/DC, with these guys you need every album they ever made including the Austrailian only releases to cover them.

hoges,
no, the forum folks have always been enlightened. it's mostly friends and people i know in life who are the rabid stones fans.

i guess i was expecting too much. it is frustrating because a lot of the stones' songs sound like if they had just worked on them a little more they would have had something truely great.

i too have the sacd remsters, but listened to them on a pioneer ld/cd hybrid player. i'll give them another spin on my changer and d777.

redshifter, I hope the next recommendations you get are good ones, I have to say that I've never been steered wrong on this forum, I guess I've been lucky, or the people who respond in my threads are just of the same musical taste.
