I just got one today. Only a couple bucks more than in the U.S. and I must say that it's pretty much okay, nothing special or mind blowing, just gets the job done.

It has clear, nice vocals, the bass has a small bit of distortion and the sound doesn't seem to be very open or tridimensional. Yet, it's detailed, everithing seems to be there. Mind you, violins don't sound too good, kinda shrilly. Recordings with natural bass sound okay. Overall, the sound lacks warmth.

As for skipping, it has no protection, but you can actually walk with this thing, not jump or jog, since it seems to have a good suspension, better than my dead Panasonic without antiskip on. I wonder how it would behave in my car. I'll let you know, don't worry. It has a mayor con: No line out, but the output seems to be very strong: 20mw per channel. So, it´s perhaps not the best choice if you have an amp, but could be an okay alone player.

So, in conclusion, it's an okay player. Good for the price, but you can get better sound for sure with a bit more money. My favourite player, so far, is still the RS-3940, so if you can get one, go for it.

Anyway, my impressions could change after more listenings, so I'll add to this post later. I hope this helps to anyone looking for a player.

I had a Lennox CD-87 which, I think, is a model above the CD-50. It also has a powerful 20mW headphone out, which was the reason I got it. It's line-out was pretty good too.

I liked it until it started to give me reliability problems after only a few months of indoor-only use, which really didn't surprise me given the cheap build quality. You really do get what you pay for.

Yep. I know. I plan to keep this player for as long as it lasts, but I plan to buy something better for Xmas. Anyway, I am listening to this player, and can't find anything to be overly entusiastic about it. I guess it could be qualifyed as a "normal" player, not overly good, not really that bad.

Okay, and addendum. After different types of music.

Yngwye Malmsteen's "Seventh seal", sounds harsh.

Simple Minds "Glittering Prize", sound better, a lot. But sometimes the player doesn't seem to like synts or drum hats.

Bela Fleck's "Tales from the Acoustic Planet", sounds great.

Mars, the bringer of war, by Holzt, Chicago Symphony/James Levine. It's freaking me out. I am scared, the sound is harsh but as sinister as I think it should be. Jupiter, he bringer of joy, sounds good. I guess this player likes symphonics too.

In general, the sound kinda reminds me of good FM radio. Good with a good recording, not doing much to improve unlively material and being really bad with harsh recordings.

As for construction and other stuff:

- The four batteries are hard to put inside and take out.

- Funny enough, it doesn't skip a lot in the car and sounds very good connected to car stereo via cassette adapter. It still lacks a wide sound.

So, do I feel sorry for paying 30 bucks for this player? Not really. Do I fell trhilled 'cause I got a good player for cheap? No. It's just okay, and for the price you can't really expect a lot. I guess you cand do worse within this price range, but for better sound, get a more expensive player.

Onix...

how is Bela Fleck...that is, what's he and his music like? i've heard some friends rave about his stuff, but never bothered to listen; and now you like him too-- perhaps i should go get a used CD of one of his

and The Planets is a big fave to listen to also, except...i seem to have lost my CD of that one...must replace, especially with the 3904 about to show on my doorstep

Hey Randy. Bela Fleck is like a mix of bluegrass, jazz and rock. Very cool, go and try with any of his bands CD's. You won't be dissapointed. Maybe you can get one of his CD's to try on your 3904. Take care.
