Inspired by the thread "legendard PCDPs", I am addicted to PCDPs collection. However, I have tried various search engines and found not much information in regard of theses vintage SONY top end PCDPs. I would like to propose to set up a thread with all the pictures of what head-fiers generally believe are legendary PCDPs that are worth collecting. So head-fiers please take a shot of your own PCDP (if it's not already in this thread). Besides, I will be nice to post the price you paid for (or ending bids in ebay), so that we head-fi collectors have some idea in mind about how much these PCDPs really worth and don't pay/bid excessive prices.

60-90 days after posting of this thread (depending on the progress), I will organise and summarise the information and inputs from you guys, and create a web page dedicated to these legendary PCDPs.

Moderators,
Would apprecaite if you could make this thread STICKY if possible.

The official release on 21st October 1985 was the D-50MKII instead of D-50 that we generally refer to it. D-50 is the model name for the PCDP prototype publicly announced on 1st November 1984.

SONY D-350 that I bought recently for around USD80. The unit is almost new. However, the headphones and the wired RC are dead. It even came with a beautiful plastic hardcase. Sound quality is exceptional with a powerful hp jack that can drive my HD600 pretty well. Tried to used DT770s with same gd results but failed to impress with my 600 ohm AKG K240DF. Satisfactory results with my K501s and Grados too. No hp hiss whatsoever but kind of distort at high levels (around 9-MAX).

[Edit 16/8] new pics updated!

Philips AZ6829: product year unknown.
Not too sure if this one is legendary or not but looking very interesting and classy. Well, sort of like a B&O designer product to me. Anyone has this? Please come in and share with us.

And its brother Philips AZ6821

Fellas,

don't worry too much about pics of D777& 905. I have already taken pictures of D777, D900 & D995. The only problem is that my PCMCIA CF adoptor gone dead. I will post the pictures once I get a new adoptor.

Sony D-E01, Sony's 15th anniversary top model, featureing cool slot loading mechanism that some reported tend to scractch CDs. Correct me if I am wrong.

[Updated 16/8] Finally managed to find a used D-E01, the unit has quite a lot of scratches on the surface but otherwise function quite well. Obviously not well taken care by the previous owner. I got it for around USD120. I just lost an ebay auction for a brand new E01 which finally went up to USD290. As for the sound, it compares nothing like the older generations PCPDs such as D25s or D777, D905s. But hell, the slot loading mechanism is cool. Perhaps, it really does scratch your CDs as the CD slot in and out often get in touch with the opening. My adviceL don't buy it for sound quality, buy it only if you are seduced by the look.

Sony D-915 alongside D-955. The D-915 is also Sony's 15th anniversary model, I heard that it shares the same electronics as the Sony D-E01 but D-915 is made in Malaysis instead of Japan.

Hi katsudon1,

I recently purchased this unit, it's a Sony model D-14 with docking station manufactured December 1985. It has no provisions for battery power but takes 9 volts DC from an external power supply or the included dock. The unit has headphone, line out and the aforementioned DC in. What's really nice about this player is that when docked, the dock supplies RCA line out jacks and power to the player. The line out is strong and clean as is the headphone output. I paid $60 (USD) for it from a fellow Head-Fi'er.

Hi,
As per my knowledge “The first” is D-5 (D-5A), I will check date of manufacture and let you know tomorrow. D-14 is the second, basically both looks very similar.

My D-5A has date of manufacture April 1985

That very well may be, I'm not claiming it's the first, just an early model due to the manufactured date. And if the photo is of the D-5, the D-14 is absolutely identical. My D-14 is a dead ringer for the unit pictured. I'd imagine the only differences would be slight functional/operational differences. I don't have a manual to compare should you have a D-5 manual. If I can get my hands on a digicam I'll post shots of the rear panel and the units undocked. It's a very nice unit and works well.
