New Head-Fier
Hi all.
I've always been a perfectionist, but I'm a lazy perfectionist. So I always tell myself that if it's not perfect, hey, we'll get there. Or else I think it's perfect when it's not.
One of my life-long projects has been to build the world's greatest playlist. At first, this simply meant collecting all my favorite songs and shuffling them. Haha, yeah, I know--very subjective. Well, it still is. The only difference is that my tastes have broadened as I've tried to embrace more styles of music from all over the world and from the past. The project also quickly mutated. When I realized that some shuffle functions attempt to play similar songs back-to-back (so far culminating in my use of Sony's SensMe algorithm), I started trying to facilitate a situation where my shuffled playlist sounds like one continuous song. This even involves an ongoing project to clip the beginning and end of a track if it's silent, and to clip stuff that isn't "the song" from live tracks. I also balance the volume (as close as they can be brought to a central decibel point without clipping). Well, then I got it in my head that I was still doing the continuous song angle, but I'm simultaneously making it sound like a radio station! Yes, I am insane. I've been adding station IDs and commercials that are all music whenever I can get a hold of some. Sometimes Youtube is the only source, and I understand their audio bit rate is nothing to write home about. My minimum for any song that exists in higher bit rates is 256.
I don't know how you all feel about gear, but I know I have a few things that might be frowned upon by the community, and that's fine. I'm interested in your opinions! Some of it I might seem stubborn about replacing, and part of that is my budget. Some might be negotiable, some could change in time.
Right now my primary headphones are the Audio Technica ATH-SR5BTBK. I play my music off a Sony Walkman NWZ-A17 with all the special filtering functions turned on. In-line between these two devices is a Boomstick. It seems to work remarkably well!
As far as a speaker, I have a Bose Soundlink Mini II. Yes, I know, Bose. They're reviled by many, and I didn't know when I bought it. But I gotta say, it actually sounds very good to my ears. Clear, crisp and full. I also hook that up to the Walkman, and I've been using the Boomstick in between, but I'm thinking maybe that doesn't actually help.
Anyway, that's me and my setup.
How's it going?
