I'm looking to buy sub-$100 headphones, and am thinking about the Grado SR60 and Alessandro MS1. I heard the MS1s are better, so I'm thinking about those, but which one has the more leakage? I'm probably be going to use them at work, so I don't want something that others will definitely be able to hear.
(By the way, does this mean I should only consider closed headphones instead? I don't have any experience with headphones, so I'm not really sure what the difference between open and closed is... Are those over-the-ear $10-$20 headphones you can find at Best Buy also open? Pretty much the only ones I'm familiar with =).)

Yes, MS-1s are great!

Yes, they do leak a lot

Yes, SR60 do leak a lot too... did you take a look at them? they are just equal! the main difference is the drives...

anyway, if you need no leakage, forget the MS1 or grados (anyones!) - go instead for some closed

(http://www.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=241233) - try to see AT-ES7 (just a tip..)

BUT if you dont mind a little bit ok leakage and you want great great sound, go for the MS-1 - i.e. it is not impossible to use them at work - I do that sometimes, but I can never listen to loud music, because my friends then will ear the music too.. ..

So, i guess it's just a question on how much will you be able to control your volume at work, because when you bring them (ms1) to home, they just sound amazing..

[FYI - MS-1 is the BEST set for <100$]

i think the leakage for all grados and alessandros are a lot hehe! but get the alessandro, i read here that they are tamer and less fatiguing to listen to com[ared to the sr-60. but comparison aside, i wold say the ms-1 really do sound good!

MS-1s leak like the Titanic post-iceberg.

If you listen to low volumes that's fine though, your friends won't be able to sing along until you reach the higher volumes. They also let all sound IN, i.e. they do not block out any outside noise.

Depends on what you're going to use them for. I'd never use them for commuting. For work I'd say you'll probably be fine unless you want to block out noise or watch pörn at insane volumes.

When I used my MS-1 in my dorm room this last semester, my roommate (about 8-10 feet away from where I used them) said he couldn't hear them at all. It probably depends a lot upon how loud you listen though.

Trust me, both will leak the same. They're terrific cans and I'd recommend them highly but if you''re concerned about sound leakage (in or out) you need to check out sealed can or go the IEM route.
