I hope I'm posting this in the right section... I recently hooked up a pair of headphones to my 32" Toshiba using the 2 RCA audio outputs using RCA->3.5mm connector to double female 3.5mm then to phones. Noticed right away there's a lot of noise in the background (I'm guessing due to poor audio hardware on the tv?).

Is there any proper way to connect headphones to a tv without a audio receiver? Possibly an amp maybe?

The tv's only outputs are optical digital audio and the RCA for audio.

Run optical into a DAC that has that connector and run the DAC to a headphone amp, integrated amp, or find a DAC that has both an optical in and a decent headphone amp.  You may want to try another RCA to stereo cable first just in case  the cable is bad.  My guess is that the RCA outs on the TV are not grounded because they expect the ground to be on the receiver / integrated amp side.
 
What headphones are you using?

Was using xb500's, they're the worst of my 2. The other is senn rs160 wireless which didn't sound bad (I'm guessing the wireless dock could be providing the ground??) but looking for more bass. I have a hfi-580 comming in the mail so I was hoping to sort this out ASAP.

I'm guessing this would work? and since its also a computer sound card could I possibly record a synth keyboard onto a laptop with those L R line in's?

This ones cheaper but only has a 3.5mm input. But sill a DAC
