I´m looking at buying a large capacity DAP, at least 30gigs, preferably even more like 80, that can be rockboxable. It's not that I need rockbox, but I have a huge collection of flac/ogg music files that I'd like to carry along. Somehow, the Cowon is begining to feel a bit short sized... and I'd be interested on getting a model where I can consider rockbox stable. Video and other stuff is irrelevant.

Can someone list a few possible contenders and a means to differentiate them. I get particularly confused with the iPods and their generations... is there a set of simple rules so I don't get something I don´t want by mistake?
I mean... I don't want to be stuck with iTunes (ever!) hence the rockbox requirement (also loads of gigs in ogg to keep).

I'll be getting later a portable amp/lod to boot and want to keep my Phonaks.

5.5G iPod maybe? They sold in sizes up to 80GB, and might even be upgradeable with larger disk.

How can I differentiate a 5.5 from the rest of the pack?

you can get 48GB out of a D2 (16GB D2 + 32GB SDHC), it plays ogg and flac with no issues, and there might be a 32GB D2+, leading to a 64GB Flash memory set up,

I listened to an Archos 5 250gb and I was very impressed with SQ and Eq available. It plays Flac, ogg, and everything else. I did not have enough time to really test it but at first listen it was good!

Comes in 60-160-250 gb.

Supposedly battery is 20 hours on audio!

regards,

My 5G iPod has 60 gigs and is rockboxed. I like it, but there are some things I wish I could do with it.

Really? I wanted an Archos 5, but I've been worried about the SQ and I think there's something new coming from them.

weird, i was under the impression that extra purcheases were needed to add flac/ogg support to the archos..

Flac and ogg support is in the new firmware upgrade.

It does not support Alac ipod loosless but it supports ipod lossy. We had to buy an ad-on to support ipod m4p and m4v video file.(h264).So I do not know if the ad-on brought the support for ipod lossy or if it was in the original firmware.

I have movies in mp4,m4v and avi and they play fine. Other video format are supported with an additional $20 ad-on.

It has a 5 band custom EQ plus the standard EQ of classic, rock etc.

Per their web site:

Audio playback**: Stereo MP3 decoding @ 30-320 Kbits/s CBR & VBR, WMA, Protected WMA, WMA pro 5.1, WAV (PCM/ADPCM).
AC3 stereo audio and 5.1 sound files (via SPDIF output of DVR Station)
Flac and OGG Vorbis audio files

With optional software plug-in:
AAC3 and AAC+ stereo audio files

Only in 2 weeks will I have the possibility to test the player again as regard audio.
regards,

I also have not heard of the archo's having that good sound quality. There are not to many in depth reviews of them when it comes to sound quality but I remeber seeing a model where the S/N ration was on 69db which is pretty bad.

Anyone else have experience with the Archos where it comes to SQ?
