Since the current owners of Lampizator DAC are being kind of shy.  I think this unique dac needs its own thread.  I'm planning on acquiring one in the near future so I thought this thread could have useful information for those considering it as I am.  Unlike most DACs, some amount of tuning is possible since its uses various tubes for power and rectifying so hopefully owners can share their experience.  I'm going to keep my comments away from a review as I don't have one yet to fully test.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

www.lampizator.eu (ugly site, but lots of info but a bit hard to navigate hence my links)

Lampizator is the product of Lukasz Fikus and Lampizator (the company) is based in Poland.  He built his reputation first doing tear downs on high end audio equipment and calling BS on companies who were essentially taking low end products and repackaging them with a high end case and a few "enhancements."  Unlike most critics, he would then suggest mods to enhance the sound so DIYers could get the better than the high end equivalents.

Here are some examples with some of the biggest names in audio:

http://lampizator.eu/LAMPIZATOR/REFERENCES/krell%20cd300/Krell%20CD300.html

From there, they started doing mods similar to modshop, before venturing on their own with the release of the Lampizator DAC.  Lampizator DAC is pretty unique.  It's unclear which DAC chip he is using to build his DACs around, but it is most likely to be a ladder based DAC given his previous comments around which DAC chips he liked but I haven't been able to discover it.  He seems to try to minimize the use of digital processing and liberal with the use of tubes.  He builds the rest of the DAC with carefully chosen parts similarly to how some of the high end semi-custom head amp guys do (Headamp comes to mind) and tests through variations of the same part to arrive at his decisions.  While he is technically trained, he seems to approach the whole process with much more of an artist's touch.  DACS are semi customizable and they are upgradable as new generations come out for reasonable amount (at least compared to others and so far).

Here is their description of their DAC:

VARIOUS LEVELS (MODELS)

Basically level 3-5 is ever increasing quality of parts but same basic design.  Level 6 is a no compromise "redbook" solution.  Level 7 is a 2A3 solution trying to minimize digital parts as much as possible.  Please note that a "BIG 5" exists also but not explained in link below.  BIG 5 is level 5 in one big box instead of 2. As for size of BIG 5, excluding the front knob, depth is a touch under 19 and 3/4 inches, width is 17 and 1/4, height just a smidgeon over 5 (from bahamaman).

One other interesting thing is the DSD solution which can be added/included in standard DAC or a self contained unit.  The DSD solution either way is basically an entirely another DAC and is very simple/elegant in its design.  Most other DSD solutions involve some type of conversion around the PCM side of the DAC which probably would involve some kind of compromise.  As Lampizator's DSD function is basically a separate DAC, you basically need to manually switch (via remote) when you want to play DSD or PCM even though they can both feed the same USB port.

What an outstanding compendium of information about our beloved Lampizator, Crashem!  I am so grateful that you took the lead on this . . . I wouldn't have been able to have done it the justice you have.

A couple of additional, perhaps random, thoughts.

The unusual company/product name, Lampizator, is principally derived from the Polish word for vacuum tube ("lamp").

Lampizator is represented by a North American distributor in New York state.  Because I want to avoid sounding like a shill, I think it's best to refrain from including their contact information (but you're welcome to pm me if you're interested).  I have no affiliation with either the manufacturer or distributor.  Having said that, I am a huge, unabashed fan of their DACs!

I am very pleased to see you gentleman have taken an interest in LampizatOr products!

Some of you may remember me as I used to spend a lot of time on this board, but for those who do not, I'm Fred A.  I along with Robert Reich have taken over North American Distribution for LampizatOr products.  Co-Distributor, Robert was actually just at the recent spring NY meet with our Level 7 DAC.  Additionally, for any of you who will be at AXPONA next weekend, we will be showing our Level 7 again in a room partnered with Vapor Audio, Purity Audio and Verastarr--I encourage you to come check us out.

Please feel free to drop us a line at Lampizatorna@gmail.com with any questions you might have.

Happy Listening!

Hi Fred,  I was hoping you could clarify a point that I came across from a reseller (I think) that stated that the DSD Dac (and by extension the DSD Dac module) is not compatible with Foobar2000.  Is this still the case or does it now work the the SACD plugin?

Thanks.

Is it possible to get the Level 4 Gen 4 with a volume control?

Gopher, it's a username I haven't seen in YEARS! Didn't you have something to with grover cables? These IC cables were popular at some point over here, there were upgrades after upgrades, after upgrades, after upgrades. I probably had some of the last series, and still have the cables with me. Not even sure it's plugged now, but it was and still is doing its duty .

It is my understanding that since the early days foobar has been compatible and is stable.  I would test this myself for you now, but my DAC is already packed for AXPONA in Chicago this upcoming week...   I will seek to confirm this with Lukasz when he returns from Easter vacation.

A volume control is indeed possible with the Level 4 DAC and is an option I highly recommend.  Aside from my own experience, which may be biased, I have customers who have set aside some VERY well respected preamplifiers in the $5K+ range in favor of the Lampi VC.

Hi Arnaud!!

You've got a very good memory indeed!  I was Grover's original beta tester for his cables and shared some of my enthusiasm here on this forum...  helped start the Grover craze.  :)

I haven't spoken to him in a couple of years, but I am pleased to see his cables continue to be a popular.

Just was taking a look at the Level 6 (not the BIG SIX).  I'm assuming a VC can be added here as well?

Thank

The physical space in a Level 6 is significantly tighter than the Big Six, but I do believe Lukasz has managed to get the volume control in there before.

Gopher,

1. Could you give an explanation of where the Level 6 fits into the different levels?  I am getting some contradicting info.  I know it is of different design than levels 3-5 and I have heard it described as a redbook specialist.

2. Have you thought about starting an audition chain with one of the less expensive models such as level 3?

Hello,

Lampizator have my interest check. How does this compare between my Audio GD M7, MSB Analog DAC or AMR DP777 ?

My main apprehension about the Lampi is that soften too the sound and are too dark ?
