One quick question: Why is the default conversion of LAME -V2 and not -V0?

Why would you want CVBR these days with the capacity of drives, both in portable and hard drives...
Moronic default setting.

I believe they feel it is the optimum setting offering a balance of performance and size while exceeding the point of transparancy.
-v0 is above and beyond

Probably because its the optimal balance between sound quality and file size.
V2 have been proven to be transparent in ~95% of the cases. Hence anything higher bitrate is mostly a waste of space, for most people that is.
