Has anyone done a comparison between the Grado PS-1’s and the L3000?

Could you please indicate similarities if any and differences? Do these 2 headphones complement each other or do they compete in any way. I’ll keep the PS-1’s and think a closed headphone would have its uses.

I’m sensing a lot of L3000 Love out there and I could just possible convince myself I need a closed headphone. I’d make the sacrifice out of consideration for those who might be bothered by the PS-1’s leaking sound like a sieve.

I mostly listen to rock and roll but want to listen to more classical and jazz. I’ll be using the EAR HP4.

If there’s any insight as to where to buy the L3000’s and current prices I’d be forever broke and grateful.

I've never really thought of it in those terms, I mean after all, he who dies with the most headphones wins, right?

Anyway, I would need to spend some time listening to both to give detailed impressions and I'm pressed for time right now. As far as the larger picture though, I would say they are complementary. Either are capable of doing most any music you throw at them well, but they have very different personalities.

The Grado and the L3000 are both fun phones with some idiosyncratic features to their presentation, but the PS-1 is sort of a musclehead that just enjoys exerting itself at something like lifting weights, that is physically difficult but not mentally challenging while the L3000 is more refined and it's performing ballet that offers both physical and mental skills.

I think both are great for rock, but the PS-1s do it better, just because of that bottom end slam. OTOH, for classical and jazz, while I enjoy both, the L3000 is the one I'd turn to.

For something like straightahead rock, the PS-1s are great while for more subtle endevours, the L3000 shines...

I think that with the l3000's you would gain more layering, instrument placement and an equally pleasing headstage. I find the l3000's soundstage not as expansive as other headphones I have heard but if you are use to Grado headphones it should be no biggie.

I agree with gpalmer that they complement each other. Although you will find what the l3000 lack in slam and impact they make up for in tighter and a more easier on the ear impact (although the ps-1's bass impact does not bother me) also the l3000's bass impact is not anemic either.

Is it possible for you to audition a pair from a headfier who lives near by? This way you could see if it is for you or not

With my Singlepower SDS amp (Kenrad + Slyvania), I found the L3000's bass to be excellent in both quality and quantity. You must also realize that the L3000 is also more expensive.
