Getting good sounding gaming headsets is difficult. Headphone.......no problem. But getting the good headsets with phones AND microphone boom built in is not easy.
Sure, you can buy the crud locally.
Hardly anyone carries them, the good ones.
Yamaha makes some, and you can usually get these special order at a few online places.
Koss makes a couple. All onlines stores say "Discontinued" or "out of stock" for these.
So I ordered R65b's from Koss Corporation website. Came in about a week, UPS.
Construction. Ok. Very Plasticy. I have a FAT head, at 6'3" and 300+ lbs. They are tight, but ok. They do fit. The mike is removable, and seems to be ok.
Microphone. Snaps on. Did not work at first. It requires bias power supply. Most computers don't have that. But it DOES come with a bias supply battery pack, a small thing that uses 2 AAA batteries. Once I installed that, everything was fine. Sound is good. Gain is excellent.
Sound. OK. Better than my Labtecs for sure. They are closed phones with vinyl cushions. Sound is not audiophile, but tolerable. Very sensitive. I really had to lower the volume control on my system considerable from the Labtecs.
Cord. Flat, with three cables. About 5' long. Cord splits underneath the chin...not one piece to one ear only. Goes to both ears and microphone "externally". I find the cord noticable, but not really annoying.
Cost. I paid $50 plus shipping. Value? Ok. My big Labtecs were more. But they are falling apart after a few years. They are not jewels. For $50, these are reasonable.
Headroom now has a section on "gaming" headphones. Silly I think. When you game, you use voice communications if you play over the internet....I do. So you need a microphone. Best deal is communications type headsets, like these Koss 65b's. Since Headroom carries Koss, you would think they would carry these in their "gaming" section. At least Koss sells them.
There is also a cheaper version on the Koss website.
These Koss headphones are under the "Communications" section of their products.
I am happy with mine...so far.
