Koss Porta Pro

Welcome to head-fi, sorry about your wallet. I think that's the greeting around here(i didn't grasp the ramifications at first, but now, woe is me, i do) In general, before posting a question, I would suggest doing a search, e.g for "portapro" and "review". Not to discourage questions, believe me, people here *love* to talk about headphones

But there may be times where you won't get a whole lot of responses because a topic has been done to death(like this one

Anways, a lot of people(including myself) like specific headphones in the lower end Koss line:

KSC-35 clips ons: $35ish

Sportapro: $30ish

Portapro: $50ish

In fact I almost never read about any of Koss' cans over 50 bucks.

If you can find the KSC-35 clip ons, the concensus seems to be they are the most balanced of the three. The Sportapros are a bit bass heavy which people like for running/exercising. They're fun but a little murky. I have the Sportapros and the KSC-35 clip ons and i find that at work, i listen to the KSC-35s more. They're nice and open sounding for jazz. But i can't use them for jogging because they slip off.

I'm not too familiar with the Portapros, but i think they all have a similar sound.. Any of them would be leagues better than the plasticrap that comes with a new portable music player.

Be careful though, once you go good can, you don't go back.

------------------------------------

Sony Earbuds: 19 dollars

Sportapros: 35 dollars

Grado's: 60 dollars

The look on your room mate's face when you tell him you can't pay rent as you tightly clutch your new Sony CD3000's : priceless

You should be able to get them for around $35 off Amazon. As mentioned the 35's are liked by many here also. You can get them direct from Koss. In this range also is the Grado SR-40s, if you can find them.

Didn't mean to directly compare them (their sounds are different), but they are in the same price range. Here's the 40's if you are interested. Same drivers as the 60's. If you're looking at the 125's consider the Alessandro MS1's. Similar specs for $99 shipped.

PortaPros are good cans but the KSC-35s are much better phones in my opinion, and you can get them for the same price or cheaper. I just got my second pair of 35s today--double the pleasure, double the fun! Do a search and you'll find that most head-fiers prefer the 35s. Actually, most head-fiers like the 35s more than any other phone under $50! (not to say there's no room for differing tastes, though)

Oh, and you might read some threads saying that you can achieve the sound of the 35s by correctly orientating the PortaPros on your ears--I, however, haven't found this to be so, read about my adventure here--http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/showt...rtapro+drivers

welcome to head-fi, welcome to the addiction

Well, imo they're excellent price/performance-wise. Especially now that Koss has discontinued the KTX-Pro, which I believe used the same drivers as the Porta/Sportas (just more cheaply built, and not collapsible).

If you're looking for "as cheap as it gets with decently listenable sound," check these out (I think they're the reincarnation of the KTX-Pro) -- nice hyper-modern styling too:

I've owned the KSC-50's and as far as I know, you're a heck of a lot better off with the 35's. The sound was good, but the design wasn't the best. 35's are 30 bucks from Koss, and I'd get those or the PortaPro's.

i have nothing but praise for my porta pro's, they are without a doubt the best "portable" headphones i have come across, they can be driven by just about anything, the high's are not to harsh (unlike my ex71's and my er6's that i just sold) and they don't have a traditional headband instead of a clip-on which i find annoying (the clip on that is) and when you move around your ears flop like dumbo

i also had a pair of jvc victor hl700, which actually sounded pretty good but i couldnt get past the clip on factor and wound up giving them to my little bro who was visiting from germany (i dont think he realizes what he has)... but anyway the bottom line is you cant go wrong with the porta pro's
