After about 8 years, my Koss ESP 950, electrostatics began to fail in the left channel. Koss provided a lifetime warranty to the original purchaser. I packed the unit, headphones and amp, in their leather carrying case, boxed them and sent them off with a check for $6.00.

They just came back last night, after less than 2 weeks, not repaired but REPLACEDwith all new units, even the case. And they work just fine now.

Thanks KOSS, I wish there were more companies like you.

Is that $6.00, $60.00, $600.00 or $6,000.00 dollars?

That's great service!

BTW, how do they compare with SR-404? I've been curious since I loved SR-404 but they just weren't comfortable enough for me to keep them and I can't afford to step up to SR-007.

FYI Koss provide lifetime warranty in all of their products, not only this expensive item. It is a real shame they don't try to make better sounding products is the higher scale....in the lower they got a few though that sounds decent.....

I also have the Stax 404 with a SRM-3 Amp and overall the Stax is probably better especially for clasical music. The sound has a cleaner, more solid quality, possibly due to the Class A Stax amp and lighter diaphragm. By comparison, the Koss have a more dirty/dynamic-phone sound. This is by comparison only, in absolute terms the Koss are still very good. However the Koss have less edginess with bad sources which have too much treble and may sound better on pop/rock, especially poorly recorded rock/pop of which there is a lot. The have a nicely balanced mid-range, a lighter upper bass but still an extended lower bass, comparable to the Stax.

I use an upgraded power supply on the Koss rather than the supplied transformer and this definitely gives them more punch than the Stax. However if you use a good power cord and keep the contacts clean, the Stax can be pretty punchy too.

Cost wise, at $600.00, amp and phones together, the Koss are a better buy than most Stax set-ups. However many people buy Stax from overseas for about 1/2 the US list price, thus negating the Koss price advantage. However, you get minimal or no warranty, compared to Koss' oustanding warranty.

Comfort-wise, while the Koss is comparable in size, it is much lighter and does not press on the ears like the Stax.

How do they know who is the original purchaser? you have to send in the receipt? how did you keep track of the receipt after 8 years?

I took advantage of Koss' warranty for my Portapros as well. I just sent the headphones, a check for $6, and a little note saying what was wrong (a wire break somewhere in the line), and about a week or so later I got it back. Good stuff!
