She's still a baby - just getting over not looking hip anymore. Besides, when did the NME ever really have their finger on the pulse of _good_ contemporary music?

To me being hip means doing what you want and liking what you want and not caring what other people think. Being a leader not a follower, you know?

Her article is basically saying, "It's OK for me to like Phil Collins because other people my age do too. Plus, the Hives suck because they're overexposed. It's now hip to like music that's so un-hip that it's hip." It's the exact reverse of a typical teenage mentality.

A really hip person would say, "I don't care if you think I'm hip or not, Yanni, David Hasselhoff and John Tesh Three's Company: Live from the Tower of Babel rocks my world. And who the $#*& are you anyway?!"

IMO of course

Yeah, the writer sounds like some sort of pseudo-hip person that is just discovering what most people should be doing all along--listening to music because you like it.

Radio in the 80's was the shizniiiiit at least in NYC. I can admit to appreciating some of that late 70's early 80's stuff as some of it is original and was produced well, but they should have left Phil Collins in the jungle with Tarzan. Bad taste is bad taste.

I remember going to visit my 28 year old cousin in Peru in 1998. I was 21 at the time and thought I was hip as screw. She was already married and she had all her married friends over. As a treat for me they got some beer, Pizza Hut, and wine. As the night wore on they all got drunk and spent the night singing along to Bread, Gentle Giant, and ABBA, while I sat on the couch.

Needless to say one of the longest nights of my life.

I wonder if Ill be doing that with my little cousins, but instead of ABBA it will be Notorious BIG and Wu Tang Clan.

Huey Lewis is great.

I love what Chrissie Hynde said about the spirit of rock: "I'm ugly, I'm a dog, fu-ck you."

Heh, I do that now with Queen, Anthrax, and Prince. Except my cousins aren't with me. Come to think of it, no one's usually with me. Maybe that's why I have no friends...

They say the heart of rock and roll is the beat, and, from what I've seen, I believe them.

I listen to mostly classical, so I'm used to being King Dork. Though in a way, classical music escapes that kind of scrutiny; outright scorn is replaced with a kind of deer-in-the-headlights puzzlement. Like the dilemma of the kid in school who wore coke-bottle lenses and read all the boring grownup books -- if you beat him up, you can't join his study group later, so best to just leave him alone.

I never have to worry about being trendy, because I would never succeed even I tried.

There was a whole lot of really bad music around when I was 12, and some good music. Not all that different than today's situation.
