I have basically just been introduced to what ASIO is and managed to get this configured for Winamp. No similar success with the latest version of Foobar, so perhaps Winamp will be my player of choice for the forseeable future. We'll see.

Anyway, I'm also reading about "Kernel Streaming" plug-ins that can be used in WinAmp. Are these an *alternative* to ASIO (which I have configured and amp impressed with) or something you use in *conjunction* with ASIO?

Kernel streaming is an alternative to ASIO.

However, since there are very few applications that can output via kernel streaming there is a popular combination of using ASIO and Kernel streaming together.

There are a few mapping applications out there (ASIO4ALL etc.) that expose kernel streaming devices as ASIO devices. With these mappers you can now use any application that supports ASIO devices for output with any soundcard that only supports kernel streaming. You still maintain the bit perfect playback characteristic with these mappers.

Winamp and foobar have output modules for both so you can take your pick.

Cheers
