Hi all.

After the (new) amazing closed-back headphones, the Kennerton Magni, maybe it's time to talk (again) about this headphones ?

Alternative version of the Kennerton Thror: the hypothetical Kennerton Thekk (an alias of the Nordic God Odin, also meaning "Welcome One"); advertised weight: 395 g versus 470-480 g for the Kennerton Thror according to the wood species used.

Hi all.

Here are some comparative measurement curves, on the same measurement platform (RAA) of several known headphones, in particular concerning Focal headphones (Utopia, Stellia, Elegia, Elear and Clear) and Kennerton (Thror and Magni).

Source of these FR measurements: https://reference-audio-analyzer.pro/en/

Note: the 5.5 kHz peak is probably a measurement artifact; indeed, it is found systematically with all Focal headphones!

Some comments to make:

Ludovic, in the French forum prefers the sound of Magni to that of the Elear and the Elegia. He just ordered a Magni (like me).
Romain, in the same French forum, finds the sound stage of the Magni (closed-back headphones) similar to that of the Thror (which is an open-back headphones).
Myself, I find the sound stage of Thror slightly more open and airy than that of the Utopia, which itself is larger than that of the Stellia. I deduce that the sound stage and aeration (ie: feeling of space, the opposite of containment) of the Magni is greater than that of the Stellia.
Otherwise, the Magni is a very fast and very detailed closed headphones, and would get closer to the performance of an isodynamic headphones (like the Thror) (except for the regularity of the Thror's FR, significantly better than that of the Magni; the same is truee for the Stellia's FR which also has a more regular FR curve than that of the Magni).

Nice! The response from the Thor, looks really good.

Indeed ! :)

Especially when one examines this comparative curve of FR : Utopia versus Thror ;Tyll Hertsens of Innerfidelity (the former Innerfidelity, not the new one) would have appreciated.

19080905054223553816350783.jpg

That said, and I say that, especially to my friends @Arcamera (Andrew) (who sold his Utopia for buy a second Odin) and @ithilienrp (Dave) who owns 3 Odin, 2 Vali, 1 Magni, 1 Abyss and a few hundred other headphones , most of them in wood, and who has just ordered a superb Thror in natural Karelian birch), to reassure them: these two curves of FR, Thror and Utopia, are apparently almost identical, both particularly straight and linear, proof that these two headphones are relatively "neutral", but there is, at comparative listening for me, on the same amp Viva 2A3, quite large differences.

The Utopia is more dynamic than the Thror, more incisive and probably more detailed and also more analytical, but in its stock's version (with the stock cable) the Utopia possesses less matter (consistency) and thus appears as a little less euphonic than Thror; you have to buy a fairly expensive cable (the Entreq) to make the Utopia more consistent and euphonics.

The bass of the Thror are better, more defined, with better textured, apparently deeper, and especially the Thror supports much better high power in the bass, without audible distortions, without back clash of the voice coil (of the Focal Utopia) with clicks, when listening to powerful bass at high volume; this is the advantage of orthodynamic headphones on electrodynamics headphones.

The sound stage of Thror is more open and airy (*) than that of the Utopia. (*)(ie: feeling of space, the opposite of containment).

The midds of these two headphones are particularly successful, but of different presentation; personally I find the midds of the Thror as more natural.

The highs (treble) of Utopia are more incisive and probably better than those of Thror.

Finally, a great tube amplifier like the Viva 2A3 amp (with zero negative feedback) is well suited to both Thror and Utopia, give them quite a drive and greasy sound not to the detriment of the transparency and speed; and also give them a great beauty of the timbres, especially in the midds with more matter and pleasant harmonics; but a transistor amplifier like the Chord Hugo 2 will give more dynamism to these headphones. :)

Hi all.

Kennerton Magister (Pro) versus Kennerton Magni (tone differences, according to the RAA headphones measurement site : https://reference-audio-analyzer.pro/en/)

and some comments about it (in French) here: https://musique-o-casque.com/viewtopic.php?p=3066#p3066

In addition, my Kennerton Magni made of natural Karelian birch wood, currently at Pierre's (in Nîmes (France)), in the process of burn-in (note: I will receive my Magni in 1 week) :)
Pierre tells me that this combo is not bad; who would doubt it?

I am getting close to posting my full written review, and something happened.

I returned to Thror today, and for some reason it sounds much better than I remembered. Like much more dynamic and vivid, and I've no idea why.

I think that it requires way more burn in than I first believed, now it is clearly worth its price tag, which is interesting because at first I thought that a big part of the price was for the premium materials. Thing is, after a LOT of burn-in, they also sound good for the price point.

Hello.

I think that the burn-in of Kennerton headphones (as surely as some other headphones) is long to get all the quintessence.
I remember that the burn-in of my Odin mk2 was particularly long for it to become optimal.
My Thror, out of his box also required a long burn-in to release the bass and treble and thin the sound.
It seems the same for the Magni.
So no rushed opinion for a headphones coming out of his box, it's more cautious.

This is the thing. I didn't post a written review, because I felt like it would open up a lot more.

MAN, it opens up like a crazy one! It has such amazing details and clarity, it is insane!

To be honest, it also depends on the listening conditions: I know that if I listen at night, late (after 23 h) (with a better stability of the electricity network) and a good listening dispositions (well at rest , relaxed, not stressed, in the silence, with well-heated electronics), then, my Thror headphones (and my electronics, dac + amp) will give the best of themselves, as you describe tonight with your Thror, otherwise that could go unnoticed in other listening conditions (for example, as in a noisy, stressed and tired meeting).

Looking forward to the publication of your complete review of the Kennerton Thror; you will tell us the electronics you used with this great headphones. :)

Oh yes, tried in multiple times of the day, but even during mid day stress, now it sounds amazing!

You know, normally I would flaunt that I was using Mytek Brooklyn DAC+, but not this time. This time all the amazing results I am talking about are from a portable DAP, the FiiO M11 :)

Well, it should interest a lot of people to know that you can use the Kennerton Thror headphones, very correctly with still affordable electronics. On the French forum, Romain loves very much his Thror headphones with a Dac/Headphones amp Chord Hugo2; it's his favorite combo. :)
And another person on the French forum, Dany, bought a Thror with a Dac/amp Auris Euterpe, also not bad. https://musique-o-casque.com/viewtopic.php?p=3061#p3061

Oh yes, I think that this is the best part I have to tell about them, you can enjoy them greatly from a FiiO M11 which is really affordable, making Thror really easy to recommend regardless what gear one already owns.
