No, dude... you need to read the thread. Obviously not a Stones fan or you would have wanted some details.

I do feel (sort of, kind of, but not really) bad about the thread title. Perhaps, "Sam Cooke rumored to be alive and well in the Cayman Islands" would have been better. To be honest, I actually thought of that, but then when I read an article about Keith I learned that he was pretty bummed out when his name was taken off of the "Most Likely to be Dead Within a Year" list after having been on the list for 10 consecutive years! Only Keith... he would actually appreciate the thread title, I believe.

So, McManus, any suggestions for a "kid" born in the wrong decade? I scored 5/5 without blinking an eye on the quiz, and I just don't get my generation. Hell, I don't think I get the Gen-Xers, either.

At this rate, I'll be a grandpa in my contemporaries' eyes by 30!

Of course I read the thread! It's kind of hard to not notice the first sentence: "Ok, dirty trick..."

I am really quite surprised that so many people got #2 wrong though.

(5/5, go me?)

Well, I guess it's just that your interests happen to coincide with mine. I would expect this crowd to do much better on that quiz!

Mostly male and mostly North American or European, as well as a fair number of Asian folks by decent who live in North America or Europe. A very different crowd than my mostly female Caribbean students. I suspect they would do quite well on a reggae, soca and calypso quiz.

Ok, good that you read the thread! Sorry about the title...

I was surprised at #2 as well. I thought they would have done better. But I was also surprised in a good way with #1 and #5. I didn't think that many of them would know who Keith Richards was, but maybe they got it right by the process of elimination.

The questions were designed to be as easy as possible for anyone who is even remotely connected to the history of rock music during the 60s and 70s. It wouldn't take "expert" knowledge to know who was in The Beatles, or that Elvis is dead. Ray Charles and Johnny Cash were probably not the best foils to include because the names should have been of people who have long since been dead.

In any case, what I was really after is an attempt to gauge approximately what percentage of my students can connect with the types of artists and music that has influenced me. The answer was roughly 50% can identify at least on some level and 50% don't know rock music from a box of rocks... and, again, that's Ok with me. I was just curious.

I don't want to come across as a rock snob anymore than I'd want someone else to give me a jazz or blues or classical quiz and then tell me that there's something "wrong" with me if I didn't score well. Ok, so I'd probably do fine with jazz and blues but I wouldn't have a clue when it comes to classical; this would tell such a person designing such a test that there is a potential for disconnect in terms of our communication.

That's what I suspected with my students and my rock quiz confirmed it. More to the point, that same communications gap extents in many directions and covers many aspects of the dialogue that we have, both inside of class and outside. Makes my job "hard" at times, but I like challenges!

Heh. I'm a casual fan of those genres and even there I think I'd be seen as behind the times. I did forget about that aspect of the quiz though.

I suspect I'd enjoy your teaching (if I had any interest in the subject whatsoever

). This kind of conscious reflection on your pupils reminds me very much of a brilliant and special professor I had for English in my first year at college. Beyond simply instilling knowledge, there was never a doubt that the man took great strides to understand his class. A few of us really took to him and went out from time to time and he always sparked deep and fascinating questions we all dug into; of course, the conversations tended to slur by the end of the night! It's this kind of thing that really makes a professor stand apart from even the best teachers, taking on more of a role as mentor. All too often teachers treat their work as business, and the student body their product.

In case he happens to do a search on his name, my professor was Dr. David Ingham. He made a mark on my life and I hope the fractured, informal and oft irreverent "body of work" I've managed to amass around here doesn't bring him too much shame!

So, is this still a rumor or have anyone seen it verified by official channels?
