I have had 100s of cans now, from low to high end.
My ez favorite is an Audio Technica Ath-a900. It just sounds right to me.
It was one of my first, and I still use it regularly.

Honorable mention: I regret selling my sony cd3000

Even though I have my brand new LCD2-C for only like 4 days, I am more than sure that its going to be a keeper. The DT 1990 Pro, well I have a kind of hate and love relationship with it, not sure if its a keeper, not yet. As for the Custom Oner Pro, it got to go but I didn't find any closed back headphones which could replace it.

Hi,

the vintage ATH-900 or 900x? Have you heard both and still prefer one to the other?

I like the original a900, the blue metal one. I have had the a900x and currently have an a990z.
I still prefer the a900. More sparkle and clarity
The a990z has more bass but less energy. The a900x I like least though it's not a big difference

My Sennheiser HD598's. Seriously. I know that the 58X, the 6XX and the 600/650 get all the love, but...Such an underrated set of cans. I have used and abused them, modded them to holy heaven, and they still sound great. I have a set of vintage classic LCD-2's, and I love them, but I could live my life without them. I don't know what I'd do if I lost my 598's and couldn't replace them. I'd be very sad, that's for sure.

Philips SHL4500 for being very realistic and detailed as if you wear no headphones at all. Semi-open design and perforated pads. Got spare ones just in case.
Sennheiser HD439 for comfort both physical and audio. Got HD451 to back them up.
Panasonic RP-HT460 no top tier but make good work of all heavy styles. HD 2.10 to back them up.

The real problem here is foam only last so many years. 20 years tops; depending on environmental concerns. Just check out the new AKG K1000 review, they had to be reformed with custom foam. Then upon servicing the wire pulled out of the voice coil and had to be sent to Italy for the original creator to reattach. In fact it was not reattached but replaced as he still had parts from the early production run.

Truth is, all headphones get delicate with age with use. None last forever. You see a collection of 5 2-3K flagships on a wall, it’s a rotting investment.

This is more of a young mans issue. Lol

Mine are modded Denon D2000's. I have Fostex TH-X00 Ebony's on the way for this very reason: D2000's won't last forever. And I'll probably get the rest of the TH-X00 line to keep as backup lol.

Keepers for me are:
Sennheiser HD800 (with SDR Mod)
Grado GS1000i
ENIGMAcoustics Dharma D1000
Denon AH-D7000 (with Lawton Angled Pads)
AKG K812
HFM HE1000 v1
MD Sennheiser HD6XX
MD HFM HE4XX
Modded Fostex T50RP (with Alpha Pads)

My other headphones are on the chopping block, I'd be selling them off soon....

Hifiman Sundara. ...Had to think long and hard about this, because I don't consider them to be the best sounding headphones I own, but I seem use them the most because they pair well with all my gear and sound great whether listening to DSD audio or Z Reviews on Youtube :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
