I have a pair of Grado SR80s that I bought about 15 years ago. I really enjoy the Grado sound. Lately I’ve had the itch to upgrade to either the SR225e or SR325e.

I’ve spent a bit of time searching the forums and other sites and a couple of things come up. One is that both headphones seemed to be received well from a critic perspective. Second I hear that there’s diminishing returns as you move up the Grado line.

Would I be better off saving my money and keeping the SR80s? Should I invest in an amp (I read conflicting information on whether Grados specifically need an amp)?

I primarily use my Grados at home more often then not directly out of my iPhone X or MacBook Pro.

Thanks!

I'd just wait save up for an RS2e.

Apple products usually come with a good built in DAC function.
And I believe the Grados are easily (?) driven?
So maybe for now just buy the best value you can, in Grado, and plug them directly into the iPhone or Mac book.

This was something I was considering as well. I’d obviously have to wait a while longer.

Are there any good comparisons between the SR80 and the RS2e?

The reason why I personally would just wait longer and get the RS2e is because there isn't much of a jump from the SR80e to the rest of the Prestige line and in the case of the SR325, it's usually the sharpest one. If you didn't have the SR80e I'd say go with the SR225 or SR125. But since you have the SR80 might as well get the RS2e at a later date.

if you don't mind used and you come across an RS2i then go for that one. Maybe even an RS1i.

I did exactly this - went from the SR-80e to 325e .

Sound was extremely similar , not worth the additional cost what so ever .

The 325e was extremely uncomfortable/actually quite painful to remove after no longer than 10 minutes or so. Regardless of how much I played about adjusting them .

I had zero such issues with the SR 80’s

Hope this helps!
