  I love Karen Carpenter's voice and, to me, the closest thing that I found as engaging was music through Corrrine Drewery.  Most know her through Swing Out Sister.
 
They have similar type voices.  Check it out!!

 
She has a wonderful voice, my only album of SOS is The Living Return, they did a cover of La La Means I Love You by the Delfonics.
