I want my K81s ones to be slightly brighter/forward.
Which cable do you reckon?

Hey Volta, I have 2 pair of K81DJ. I re-cabled one first with HGA 4 conductors silver cable and I got a huge change. The veil went away, the highs got brighter but not fatiging and the whole presentation got more air separating each instrument to it's place in the soundstage.

Yesteday I re-cabled the second pair with silver plated copper. I did not like it. It got darker and the bass too boomy. I even asked my wife to listent to both with out telling her which one she was listening and she also picked the silver cable.

I also replace the ear pads for Sennheiser HD-25 velour ear pads and they got more comfortable.

I have to agree with musicman on this one. I took a pair of my friends that I recabled with Mogami mini mic cable and my pair that I recabled with a leftover solid silver Headphile cable and noticed a difference in clarity and air. If I remember correctly the bass was more tame and tighter. I'm not talking night and day but after about 15 seconds I felt myself nodding, "Yup, I can hear a difference." Ever since I've been kind of sold on silver especially when it comes to ICs. Stuff ain't cheap though.

I haven't done a direct comparo with the SPC stuff I've used often though.

Not based on what I expreinced. I would go with solid core silver cable.

True. I know the leftover Headphile cable I used is probably worth more than the DJs themselves.

I'm already thinking about pulling that cable off and using those wires for other projects. Maybe I'll try my SPC stuff and see what kind of difference I hear.

I love playing with this stuff!!

Then you should get a slightly brighter/more forward pair of phones.

It's true that going silver will cost more than the K81DJ themsleves but what about the fun of doing it? Also, I was comparing my silver K81DJ to my HD25 with Equinox cable yesterday. Even that is not a fair comparison due to the cost difference of the phones and cables the K81DJ was providing very close sound to the HD25. I would say about 90% at considerable less cost.

Can't afford silver as I'm a poor recent graduate. However, I've changed my initial canare recable to SPC and the improvement is remarkable. Copper is just too dark for the k81. With the SPC, the bass is tightened even more and the clarity and sparkle of the treble is a world of difference. The only downside is that the mids lose some of the lushness with the canare and seemed a tad recessed as the bass and treble are both brought forward. I can only imagine what silver can do, but I'm not going there...:P
