Hi there,

My headphone system is based around the K701 and Sugden Headmaster with the following ancillaries:

Analogue
======
Funk Firm Vector V
Roksan Nima
Ortofon Rondo Bronze

Digital
====
Sugden CDMaster

The sound is very good but I feel there is insufficient bass and some upper-mid range glare which is fatiguing at higher levels. There is no such issue through my speakers and the Headmaster is a Class A design so shouldn't sound thin or brittle.

I've owned the HD650, which never impressed with the Headmaster (sluggish, bass heavy). I've also owned the ATH-W5000 which I found had a unnatural, hollow sounding midrange. The DT880 v2003 I've owned was nice but bass light and too bright IMHO.

So I'm thinking about the folllowing cans:

Denon AH-D5000
Grado GS1000

Unfortunately I won't be able to audition them so was wondering if anyone has any comments on whether they might address the shortcomings I've identified? I've thought about a recable on the K701's but being based in the UK makes that pretty impractical (I've noted on the Steve Hoffman forums that he found the same sort of faults with the standard K701 that I have but really likes an ALO-recabled pair).

Any help appreciated!

Cheers
